Cozumel is a very laid back sort of place. Not at all like its neighbor Cancun. The island caters primarily to divers and the occasional snorkeler. The buzz is that both Cozumel and Cancun are in a bit of a rebuilding phase due to recent hurricanes as well so this should be considered. There is not a huge night life in Cozumel aside from the touristy stops like Carlos n' Charlies, Hard Rock, etc. Source(s): Been there, done that.

Go see the Mayan Ruins at Tulum, the view of the water from the cliffs is breathtaking! The ruins are also very cool.
Although you could purchase some kind of moderately expensive guided tour, I'd rent an open-air jeep for only $45 a day and see the island. There are a few fabulous reefs at which you can snorkel or Scuba dive.

You can also take the $20 R/T, 40-minute ferry to the mainland at Playa del Carmen and do more shopping. From there you can also rent a vehicle and visit the ruins nearby at Tulum or, much better, drive 2.5 hours further to visit the much larger ruins at Chichen Itza and the lovely town of Valladolid. Its worth the drive.
