And what will customs let me take back into the US? If they catch me with something like some medication or some plant life, (no weed, just plain plants) what will they do with me/them?

We go to fill our perscriptions all the time in Mexico. If you have a legit script the border patrol usually won't look twice. I like to get Mexican silver while there because it's cheaper there and I can bring alot home. I take back lots of shrimp and other stuff too. There is a limit as to the dollar amount or poundage but it all depends on what you bring back. I was once told by the border guard that the limit was 500 dollars in merchandise. I've never had them confiscate anything though and we used to bring all kinds of stuff home. Just don't act suspicious and they usually won't even go through your car. (In my experience anyways) A word of caution though...Don't ever take bullets or guns into Mexico. That's an automatic 20 year sentence in a Mexican jail. Seriously!
