Travel Info They definately sting. The body was bigger than a hornet. We saw 5 while we were there. I asked a few locals and they weren't sure what they were or they had never seen one. I would sure like to know more about them. We were about 100' from the ocean and we had jungle on 2 sides of the house. If anyone knows anything about these please respond. Thanks.

Interesting. I've been to Cozumel a couple times and never saw anything like you described. However, I have gone in February or March. Got bored and did some research for you. The two most likely explanations are either they were, in fact, dragonflies (see www.flickr.com/photos) or possibly even hummingbirds;if you have never seen them they can be @4 inches(or smaller or bigger depending on subspecies), flutter and dart around fruit and flowers, and are usually colorful. Hummingbirds would be found in a forest/rainforest setting from personal experience. However, if you're telling me you were bitten by these creatures, I guess that would rule out the bird theory. On the other hand, hummingbirds fear nothing really because of their agility and speed and are known to chase off/stab larger birds/animals to protect their young and that would probably have been the right time for eggs to hatch. Only other flying insect I could find (other than mosquitos) is the cicada, they can look like a wasp and I think live in forests/rainforests (see www.saltthesandbox.org/cicada_... for some pictures). Quite interesting, let me know what you learn. |
