How is Cozumel these days since the hurricane? |
Travel Info We are going on June 24. Since the hurricane, I haven't paid much attention to the conditions. Travel Tips I was there in January. the hard rock cafe is gone. Where the cruise ships come in is or was still pretty bad but all and all not bad. It's just hard to be enjoying a vaction when cozumel was hit hard. Have fun great diving and good deals on silver. You can take the boat over to Mexico to Cancun for the day. Others From what I've heard the tourist part is fine. It's been almost completely rebuilt or at least fixed to a good condition. If you venture outside the main tourist district its apparently still largely messed up. You might want to check the government advisories before you go just to see what they say, but you'll probably be fine. Like nothing ever happened. It's all set and working at 100% The wind was 175mph for almost 3 days. The water in our house was about three feet above our floor. The roads were about a foot in shallow places. It was flooded for almost three days, the sewer system was backed up because of a complete flood. The power was only out for 14 days this time, the last hurricane it was out for over two weeks. All the stores on the main street where touists go, are semi repaired. This is the most expencive place in mexico to go and live. Its beautiful, the people and culture are the best I've ever expierenced. The eye went right over us, it was blue skys for an hour and a half, then the wind switched directions. Half the snorkeling is really messed up, the diving is fine because it didn't go that deep. Columbia and Palancar are the only two reef chunks that are completely fine. Fortuniately too because those are the second best in the world. Everything was closed for two months, the cruise ships didn't come in for that time. They didn't sell alcohol for a month, we didn't even have electircity for almost that long. You couldn't find a cold beer. The back parts of town didn't get electricity for a long time, we juse learned to live life old fassion like. You will have fun, the island is regrowing well. Everyone got out of there house for those two months when it was closed, and helped rebuild everything, we still lost 20,000 people who moved away permenantly, we have about 50,000 population, then another 20,000 guests and tourists staying in the hotels. They're 30% open right now, and 25% occupancy. We used to get 10+ ships a day, today we had 3. We had 3 nice piers. Now we have 0. They docked the first ship in a five percent repaired pier downtown. If a ship docks, 60% of guests get off and look around. If they tender the people in from the ocean because they can't dock, only 25% of the boat goes. So that factor, the economy is very messed up, for another year. The docks won't be finished for almost two years, and its very expencive. Their construction methods, everything in fact, is so primative. Anyhow, I still suggest this place, its a place I never won't call my home. I live here? :) The best place for a 22 year old to be alone. |
