What is the difference between Cozumel and Calica?

Travel Info
I am going on a cruise and on some sites it says one of the ports is Calica and on other sites it says the port is Cozumel. Is it the same place with different names?

Travel Tips
Agree with both answers, be aware that many people are confused about Calica, Playa del Carmen, Costa Maya and Riviera Maya..short, Calica is considered the same as Playa del Carmen commercially (for cruise lines), in fact it is the name of the port, generally a cargo port and very small. It is only 15 minutes away from Playa del Carmen downtown. Costa Maya is a "new" cruise port 4h drive south of Playa d Carmen, in the very South of Mexico near the border to Belize, also called Mahahual, which is the little village 5 minutes from the cruise terminal. Riviera Maya is the name of the coast land from Cancun down to Mahahual...hope this helps out even more Source(s): www.cozumelwatersports.com

Other Travel Tips
Not it's not the same place. We went on a Carnival cruise this past January that was supposed to go to Cozumel but because of the hurricanes last year parts of Cozumel were destroyed. Cozumel is a small Island right off the coast. Calica is on the mainland and right across from Cozumel. Calica is a small port that accomadates the cruise ships. Calica is not really a town and you don't really shop there. There is just a really small market right at the port. I believe the small market is just there for the ship's passengers on days when a ship is in port. The main shopping area and beaches are in Playa del Carmen, which like 15 - 20 minute drive north. Playq del Carmen was beautiful and we had an excellent time. Enjoy your cruise!
Cozumel is an island, about 45 minutes by ferry and 15 min. ride to Calica. In Cozumel you can get off the ship and walk around and shop, take a tour, go to a park for snorkeling and is best known for its diving. Don't waste your time going to the ruins which are nothing compared to the ones closer to Calica. There is not much to do in port but take a tour or rent a car and go to various parks 5-50 miles away for snorkeling, swimming, seeing ruins, underwater caves, etc. Its about 60 miles to Cancun from there. Only a few flea market type stalls at the port, no good shopping or things to do within walking distance.
