Is there any shopping on the island? Do I need to shop the mainland to find anything more?

Yes there is shopping in cozumel from typical stuff to mall style, the best bars are:
Carlos and Cahrlies
Se帽or frog's

Viva Mexico <----in my op[inion the best

There's a grocery store, plenty of tourist shopping and a small mall - plenty of places to get stuff you might have forgotten - although it is a bit more expensive. Bar is personal choice - many like Carlos and Charlies or Senior Frogs. There are a lot of bars around the placita, so you could tour them all and take your pick!
Shopping is normal tourist shopping, but there is an up side to it. It's a duty free island and jewerly and perfumes are always cheaper. Even in the main street, you can always negotiate with the vendors and don't let them sell you on full price. believe they can always give you a discount or extra merchandise on sale.
Bars are all very good, Carlos n' Charlies and Sr. Frogs
