Passports to take a cruise?

Travel Info
do they require pass ports to go on a cruise ship now? last year i used my birth certificate but i think the rules changed. How do i go about obtaining one? and will it take a couple weeks?

Travel Tips
Technically you do not need a passport for a cruise if none of your stops are outside U.S., Mexican or Canadian territory. However...some cruise lines are requiering all passengers to have one. It is currently taking 16 weeks to get a passport. CALL your travel agent or cruise line and ask if youmust have a passport. If you do need one, go to the website below for all needed info on how to get a passport. If you are going in less than 16 weeks, you need to pay the extra fee for expedited service...then you should get it in about 4 weeks. Good Luck Source(s): travel.state.gov

Yes you need a passport to go on a cruise. As of Jan. 21st, I believewas the date, they required a passport for ANYONE leaving the US by ALL means of transportation. The down side is that it can take you up to 10 weeks to get one. They have a massive backlog due to the new ruling. Hope your not leaving for awhile but if your leaving in the next 4 weeks I suggest you get your travel agent or the such to try and help you get it faster.

If you are cruising this year, and are leaving from and returning to the US, then your state issued ID is fine. The rules for cruising will change January 2008. To obtain a passport you can go to your local post office, it usually takes 6 weeks, but can take longer.

YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO GO ON A CRUISE.
The regs for cruise ships will not go into effect until 2008.
However, you should start the process of getting a passport because you will need one eventually.
You do not say what cruise line you are sailing on, but most have their own websites which will give you all of the current rules.
Good Luck and Have Fun!
