Places to stay / see in Cuba in October?

Hi, I would like to visit Cuba in October (not sure if this is a good month to go there?) but I don't want to stay in resorts, although I do not like hostels. Can anyone recomend good (and not too expensive) hotels in Havana and any other interesting cities/towns.

Also, can anyone recomend interesting places to go and see while in Cuba? Just looking for some ideas.

Travel Tips
Pinar del Rio is beautiful, as is Cayo Largo and Cayo Coco. Stop by Villa Clara, Santiago de Cuba and the gorgeous Varadero (which is a resort but too beautiful to miss!). In Havana, drop by the Malecon and talk to the locals.

If you wanna stay in old Havana Hotel Sevilla is really nice and its in a localized area its really nice to see as well
Try NH Parque it get's really good reviews.
