How should i prepare for a trip to cuba? |
Travel Info Anything I should be aware of? Travel Tips Pack as you would on any holiday =) Others Mosquito repellant a must, also take some paracetomols/headache pills - I also took some anti-bacterial hand wash in a small bottle(the type were you need no water). It is daft things you will not think about, its a 3rd world country. The Cubans will be after everything off you from your named t-shirts to football shirts, named trainers like nike. My daughter and I left everything we did not want to carry home from flip/flops, clothes, tablets, sun-cream, shampoos conditioners. There were some waiters/barmen asking about our mobile phones and that they would buy them from us. When I went with my partner - he gave his Nike trainers to someone ( he has a choice of 4 people) asking. We stayed on Cayo Coco Hope you enjoy your visit - I did - saving for next holiday Stayed in Cuba February and April 07 I would take some mosquito repellent and anti-diarrhoeal tablets ie. Imodium, just in case! Avon's Skin-so-Soft Body Oil acts as a brilliant insect repellent which you can put on in the evening. A lot of people over there will expect tips. As soon as you get off the plane, you will get offers to show you to your bus/taxi and take your suitcases in exchange for a tip. We found a lot of people left little gifts for the maids ie. toiletries, pens etc as they really appreciate things like that and are hard to come by in Cuba. If you get chance to go to wonderful Havana, do so, and try and get a guided tour. Kiddies will come running up to you expecting treats etc. We took colouring pencils and a lot of pens. When buying things on the market, you can barter with them by giving them pens - which they seem to love! Others may come up to you asking if you have any shampoo or soap etc. They also love designer gear, of which there are none of over there, so you may be asked if you want to sell yours. There is one great tobacco shop just off the square in Havana which sells good quality cigars. You may get asked out on the streets if you want to buy any cigars, but just kindly refuse as they are usually the inferior type or have been made out of banana skins. If you suffer from frizzy hair, take some serum and straighteners, as the humidity and water can transform your hair! The beaches are glorious with lovely warm clear waters and I highly recommend the jet ski trip just off Varadero - highly exhilarating! I am sure you will have a fantastic time. Take lots of mosquito spray with you because I got bit 4 times with it on!! Alos, the food is very bland so I would take somekind of spice to mke the food have taste! Also, be aware that you will have to buy a Visa before you get there (if you wait ill you are there you have to wait 3+ hours). This visa needs to be filled out correcty otherwise you have to but another one! You also have to pay a tax when you leave (25CUC each!) Exchange rates are very varied. I would try & change it in the hotel if you can. Dont take american dollars, you get charged 10% to use them. Take british pounds. It is a very poor country so take useful things to give to people there. pens & lothes fr the kids and the maids really appreciate any bits of make-up and stuff!! Good Luck! Like everyone else has said, take things to give away, it goes over great! So I'll just give my two big tips :) Stainless steel thermal mugs! They don't have thermal mugs in Cuba.. thermoses yes but no mugs. They are just perfect on the beach... those crappy little plastic cups they use by the water are so small and messy :( The big cups keep your beer/mojitos whatever cold and the sand out, and make great farewell gifts to your favourite server. I always get a Canadian flag sticker for mine and all the servers remember me and my big mug :) READING MATERIAL! Lord knows what the Cubans read for fun, but don't count on finding anything to read when you get there. All I've seen is non-fiction and Hemingway! So bring enough for your trip and flight home. If you're going with a group you can take less and trade it around, and again, leave the magazines and paperbacks behind.. they'll be appreciated! Have a great time :) |
