How can an american visit Cuba legally? Are there organizations I can join that would allow me to travel there within the guidelines of the US government, volunteer work, humanitarian work etc.?

Firs-table u can't,not legally ,the only way that u can go to Cuba legally is if u have an immediate family member and u were born there,u will need a Cuban passport.on the other hand i know a lot of people that go thru Canada is pretty safe ,Mexico or Venezuela can be other options.i was just there in march my mother still in Cuba and this was my first time after 12 years,i had the time of my life the people their warmth loving faces the music the rum the lovely breezes night are definitely unforgettable i love that country ,if u want to just relax drink and eat and be in good safe company and u have family there is definitely wost it,in the other hand the exchange sucks and to be honest they are a lot of other country's that offer a lot more for your money.i don't regret for a second my time in Cuba i listen to the music everyday and look at the wonderful memories of pictures that i have. I hope i was able to open yous eyes a bit.

Nowadays is more difficult to travel to Cuba, but nevertheless, as you say, there are humanitarian and church groups that travel there. Also, some Universities and Colleges through out the US travel to Cuba for cultural gatherings. Definitely, there are ways for traveling there because all the time US Senators and business people travel.
