What are the living costs in Cuba? |
Travel Info Does anybody know what are the living costs in Cuba (a meal, a bus ticket, rent-a-car/ day, drink in a club, ticket at a museum...)? In USD or Cuban Pesos (better)! I'm European and intend to travel to Cuba this August. Thank you. Travel Tips Don't bring USD, their is a premium to exchange them now. "All the goods and services in Cuba are priced in Cuban Convertible pesos only, (including transportation and the departure tax from Cuba are priced and payable in CUCs). The value of the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC) is no longer at par with US dollars. It is 8% higher than the US dollar. To exchange US dollars into the CUC there is a 10% surcharge, while exchanges from Canadian dollars, Euros, UK pounds and Swiss Francs will not incur a surcharge. To check the daily exchange rate please visit: http://www.bc.gov.cu/english/exchange_ra... Travelers cheques that are accepted are: Visa, Thomas Cook & American Express. Credit cards that are accepted are: Visa & MasterCard. All travelers cheques and credit cards must be drawn and from Canadian financial institutions." Also, It's been a long time since I've been to Cuba at anything other than an all-inclusive so I can't help you much with the prices but I will tell you that there are basically two economies, one for Cubans and one for tourists. Cubans spend Cuban Pesos (non-convertible pesos, there's about 23-25 non convertible pesos to the USD) and you spend Convertible Pesos, or tourist dollars. So if a Cuban buys a beer, he pays a couple of Pesos (Non-convertible) so about $.08 while if you buy a beer you pay 1 convertible peso, $1.08. These are just examples my prices may be way out of date but that's the way the system works. I believe the same applies for bus/ferry/train tickets etc. I took a ferry across the bay at Cienfuegos, I paid 1 convertible peso, Cubans paid one peso. Still - it was pretty reasonable. Other Travel Tips sure the cost if you live there is your freedom & nod your head & smile, for tourist its a couple of american dollars They even confuse many friends and even Cubans that live in Cuba, who repeat without thinking that their wage is between $10 and $20 USD. Of course the topic is very complex and I do not seek to exhaust everything that one could say about it. I would like you to analyze what I explain here and let's establish an exchange where you give your perspectives and bring up the doubts that you still have. Cost of living is cheap in Cuba - I am English and took 拢 sterling with me as I was advised that no Cards affiliated with America would be accepted in Cuba. Take Euros - I was getting between 160 and 179 convertible pesos per 拢100.00 Tipping is expected in Cuba for good service. I was also told that no Travellers Cheques associated with the US would be accepted either. Our Foreign Office advised that we did not rent a car I hope this information helps you a little.
