What can happen if you goto Cuba?

Travel Info
What can happen if a US citizen travels to Cuba? like can they goto jail and what are the odds of it?

Travel Tips
Cuban soil is not actually off-limits to Americans. But the Treasury Department forbids United States citizens to spend money there without authorization, effectively barring tourist travel. U.S. ban hasn't slowed Americans' trips to Cuba Recent crackdown on illegal visits does little to end traffic.
Austin resident Dan Snow can't vote. Can't own a gun. Can't even go fishing where he wants to.
His crime?
He hopped on a plane and went to Cuba, the forbidden island, land of Fidel Castro and rumbling '59 Chevys.
He's the only American to have served jail time for going to Cuba.
He's the most extreme example of a trend - people thumbing their noses at Uncle Sam and going to Cuba despite a decades-long ban and a recent Bush administration crackdown on travel to the island.

A visit can lead to a fine of up to $55,000. Theoretically, violations could also face criminal prosectution and a fine of up to $250,00 and 10 years in prison.

I doubt it. Cuban relations with the US have been nil since they lost the backing of the former Soviet Union. The only real power they had came from their strategic location off the Florida coast. I would contact the State department for any travel alerts. You will find the link to their page on Cuba below.

The worst that can happen is a fine from the Office of Foreign Assets Control, a branch of the US Treasury Department. The fine can range from $500 to over $10,000.

That being said, you would be fined only if caught!
You need permission from the state department before entering Cuba, though you could enter through another country like Jamaica or Mexico. However, you will be subject to penalty once you arrive in the US.

Once arriving in Cuba you will be treated royally. They love Americans, and want all Americans to come back home and say what a great place it is and how everyone has free health-care. But the sad fact is that all of the beautiful places that you see and are allowed to go to are off limits to Cuban citizen's, even if they are an invited guest. Cubans are not allowed to travel freely in there own country.
I heard this on the news a few years ago, so I don't know if it still goes on, but the newscast said that passengers getting off flights from Cuba that had arrived in Mexico were greeted by the usual Mexican customs people AS WELL AS customs officers from the USA. They were there with permission of the Mexican govt. and were looking at the passports of everyone disembarking from the flight. If they found anyone with a United States of America passport, they were taken into custody and charged with the relevant crimes and forced to pay fines or whatever else was decided. I have never heard of such a thing happening with flights arriving in Canada.
