Are GB pounds readily acceptable in Cuba? |
Travel Info I'm going to Cuba next week on holiday, and intended to take US dollars. I have recently heard that GB pounds sterling have more buying power over there. Is this true, and are they widely accepted? Travel Tips I am from UK and I took sterling with me + my debit/credit cards. There are not many ATM's very few and far between. I was getting between 160/179 CUC's per 拢100.00 the cards were to pay for any excursions and emergencies. I was advised not to take anything associated with American Banks so I could not take my Capital Credit Card for example. They also told me I could not take travellers cheques issued by US banks. I was told by my bank, the travel agency and I looked on the Foreign Office for guidelines. Hope this info helps a little Have a great holiday - I am soooooooo jealous lol Source(s): Went to Cuba in Feb. and April 2007 P.S. you need 25 CUC's to leave Cuba which you pay at the airport. Other Travel Tips No. Dollars only. No, you will have to exchange your foreign currency into convertible pesos at the airport and then, when leaving the country you will have to change any convertible pesos you have left back into foreign currency, so that the Cuban government gets two whacking commissions from you. People are advised to take sterling nowadays rather than US dollars, which are given a poor rate of exchange because they are frowned upon. A few years ago they would take you anywhere, to the extent that many businesses would only accept US dollars even from local people. http://www.gocuba.ca/en/traveltips.asp... Do not use usd. The british pound has much more clout. I used them there recently. Even though i shouldn't encourage it you can score a great deal from street traders as opposed to the official route. Be warned there are heavy penalties if your caught For sure, don't take U.S. dollars, your sterling can be converted to convertible pesos which tourists must use at the air port when you arrive or your resort. Do NOT take dollars, the exchange rate is shocking, sterling or euros are the best. |
