Travel Info What are the lesser antilles? Travel Tips The Lesser Antilles are part of the Antilles, which together with the Bahamas and Greater Antilles form the West Indies. They are a long chain of islands, most of which wrap around the eastern end of the Caribbean Sea, on the western boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. The Leeward Antilles arc is the southern extension of the Lesser Antilles just north of Venezuela on the South American mainland. The Lesser Antilles more or less coincide with the outer edge of the Caribbean Plate, and many of the islands were formed by subduction, as one or more other plates slipped under the Caribbean Plate. The main Lesser Antilles are (from north to south to west): U.S. Virgin Islands: St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix[citation needed] British Virgin Islands: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke[citation needed] Anguilla (UK) Saint Martin, shared between France and the Netherlands Antilles. In turn, the Leeward Antilles are the southern Lesser Antilles just north of South America. The Netherlands Antilles are divided into the groups in the southwest and the northeast, with different naming conventions, see Netherlands Antilles. The West Indies are composed of the islands of the Caribbean Sea and can be divided into the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles. The Greater Antilles are the four largest islands in the northwestern portion of the Caribbean Sea and include Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. The Lesser Antilles include the smaller islands of the Caribbean - the Virgin Islands and the Windward Islands and Leeward Islands. |
