A war is a prolonged armed dispute between two or more groups of soldiers. A battle is an isolated part of the war.
A battle is a smaller fight within the war.
The same as the difference between a chapter and a book.

Trying to relate it to Texas, since this question was asked in the Dallas section:
The Battle of the Alamo was a chapter in the Texas War of Independence from Mexico.
