It's a lot like any other big city. We have our big-city plusses and big-city munuses.

The population is diverse, but different races tend to stay in different neighborhoods. East and South Dallas are the more diverse areas. I've lived in both. ... Though we just lost a smooth jazz station, our radio stations have all kinds of music. And there's plenty of Spanish-language TV.

The cost of living can be fairly high, but you can find some real bargains on apartments if you don't mind living in dicier areas. The cost of housing is the same way. You can get very good deals on decent new homes, but you might have to live in a depressed area that doesn't have lots to offer as far as shopping, restaurants, clubs and the like. And the closer you are to downtown, the more you're gonna pay for housing.

There are also plenty of condos. I've never bought one, so I can't tell you what it's like to own one, but I figure it's the same as other housing -- the lower the price, the less fun stuff you're gonna live around. ... Lofts are popular downtown. Big, old buildings have been converted into new, pricey, high-ceiling living spaces. They're pretty cool looking, and some have great views.

Public transportation is pretty good here. We've got rail and buses, and the system is growing. Housing has sprung up along the rail system, but it's usually pretty pricey.

There's alway stuff to do in Dallas. There's Deep Ellum if you like clubs, the Farmers Market and plenty of shopping at various malls. I hear the music scene is pretty good -- with homegrown bands and the like -- but I'm not much into live music. We have all kinds of restaurants, too, from steak to sushi.

Crime is bad. The latest big thing is copper theft -- drug addicts hit AC units to steal the metal, and they also steal it from other things like light poles. Violent crime tends to go along with drug offenses, family disputes and folks getting even for slights at clubs -- stuff like that. I've had my car and my home AC unit vandalized.

I find that groceries are cheaper if I shop around. I try to stay away from the fancy supermarkets and shop at Carnival and Fiesta. The more frills, the more you pay.

Dallas seems to have plenty of entrepreneurs. I'm always hearing ads for MBA programs at various colleges. And there are plenty of place to go to school here.

All in all, Dallas isn't heaven, but it's not a bad place to live. I like the fact that I can drive and, in a few minutes, I'm out on a lake or in the woods.

Hope this helps.

OMG... Texas SUCKS!!! I used to live in Colorado and before that Minnesota. I went from making almost 3000 a month to making 1500.... wages suck. in the city the price of living is kinda high. You ain't never seen crime like you'll see crime in Dallas...It is your life but I personally think Chicago is better!!!!
I'm not sure about the person who commented above me. She either is on something or lived in a place other than Dallas, TEXAS! :-) Nah, she was right about the crime but it's gotten a lot better over the past few years.

Cost of living, housing, etc is actually much lower than other places in the country. I've lived all around (military background). Dallas, or even Fort Worth has relatively affordable homes and apartments, has great restaurants and entertainment, lots of sports arenas, bars, shopping, and a fairly good job market and economy.
If you're going to live in Dallas proper & not a suburb, your best bet for low crime is in the northern part of the city. Traffic is bad during normal rush hour times all over the city but I can't say it't much different than other big cities. I was in Chicago over the summer & the traffic was worse there than in Dallas.
If you're interested in working in technology or healthcare, Dallas has some great opportunities.
Texas does not have a state income tax, either. But because of that, we tend to have a higher property tax rate. So it probably all evens out.
I lived in Dallas for over 28 years lived in chi. too at one time prefer Dallas the cost of living is cheaper in big d shopping and restaurants are great but I missed the activities of Chicago It's easy to start a business in dallas people are very cosmopolitan lots of singles Texans are very friendly just don't act like a real yankee
Ok, I won't tell you how BLAZING HOT it is there in the summer.

I think they have excellent expressways, and the city is spread out so it has room to grow in every direction (it is in the middle of a desert you know). The cost of living, as far as housing and apartments is much lower than in Chicago. There's not that many activities that I could see, other than major league sports; they are a great sports town. There's a lot of Spanish speaking people who live there, if that's what you mean by diversity. And remember, in the South, the Baptist Church RULES, whether you like it or not! Southern people are MUCH more outgoing about their religions, and don't mind telling you if you're NOT.
