My husband wants to move to Texas from CA.............? |
Travel Info Can anyone tell me the Good and the Bad about Texas? Dallas/Texas? Travel Tips Crime is in the city part of Dallas, there are very safe burbs. Good part is cheaper cost of living- everything is cheaper to the point that if you were lower middle class in so ca, you will live a much nicer middle class life here, people are friendly, less crime from where we lived in so ca, less gang problems we are seeing, not as much meth & pot heads, we have not seen any homeless street people although I am sure they are here. Shorter wait at the ER then we are used to. School is just as crowded, but we have not seen the year round head lice like in so ca or staff infections that were going around. No fires in our backyard mountains, we don't miss the earthquakes messing up the concrete foundation and driveway of our stucco home. NO long commute on the 10 home here, means kids see daddy an extra 7 hours a week. Bad part- weather is really crappy when it is stormy, big winds etc.. big rains. Giant Mcdonalds like Bible based Churches. Horrible heat for 4 weeks straight worse then the bad days in palm springs however, no Cig alert with that. So many people moving here means you have to act fast when buying a home if you see anything you want. Lots more people smoking here, is kind of wierd to go in a restaurant with smokers nearby. Not as much cultural events that are free to see and do. Not as many flea markets and cool discount shopping, harder to find organic stuff. Others I've lived in the Houston area for most of my life. The Good: Friendly people, food, lots of room The Bad: Heat and Humidity Good luck with your decision. You probably want a comparison of Texas to California, rather than a description. I live in Cali, but have been out to Dallas/Tex. a couple of times. In general, you'll find it hotter, flatter, MUCH cheaper, and wayy more "stretched out" than cluttered California. In specific, Dallas is Hispanic-majority, mostly young population, and has more murders and nearly 3 times as many burglaries per 100,000 people than Los Angeles. I've been to 23 states, and I'd consider TX in my top 10 to live in if I absolutely had to move from Cali. But maybe not in the top 9. http://www.city-data.com I moved from the Bay Area to Dallas Texas and I like it here. California has great scenic/recreational places. Unless you live outside of the bay area and the LA area then you are going to find that the Dallas area is a lot less crowded but still has all the glamor of a big city with cosmopolitan. I am not sure of the crime statistics but I find it more peaceful here. But If you like the mountains and extreme culture of California then I would stay there. It is not like Texas has no culture, believe me they do, it is just that there is an overwhelming amount of diversity in California when it comes to cultural arts, restaurants, and people. I love Dallas Texas. It gives me what I need and want. The best of it all: Big city, not over crowded, easy going environment, good food, education possibilities, and a lot of wide open spaces. I think it might be a feng-shui thing! And of course the Texas hospitality. Edit: there is also one more thing that is a big thing! There are a lot of people here that are of strong faith and they seem to have more morals. I think it is because of the Bible Belt Edit: Your buck should go farther here and the job economy should be better here Edit: Cilifornia has Nevada in their backyard which is fun. Texas has Oaklahoma City, Hot Springs Arkansas, and some nice rivers close by. I think Texas and Claifornia are both prime spots in the US. You should come live here for awhile. Sell your CA house and you can use the money to buy a mansion in TX. Summer time in TX is REALLY hot thou. I think Texas is a pretty good state to live in, lots of things to do and see........The cost of living varies from area to area and gas, although high, isn't as bad as other parts of the U.S. I've lived here for 11 years now and the only other place in the world that I'd consider moving to is Montana. |
