Travel Tips
Here's my analysis -
1. Driving from CA to TX is about 3,000 miles round trip. If your car drives 20 miles per gallon, this trip requires 150 gallons of gas at $2.2 per gallon, you'll be spending $330 total on gas alone. The driving time one way is about 22 hours at 70 miles per hour so you'll need to stay one night at a motel each way. A cheap one is about $40 - $60 per night. So it cost about $400 - $450 and takes 4 days just to go back & forth, it leaves you only 3 days to spend in Dallas. On the other hand you will be able to stop by & visit some places along the way.

You might be able to find a cheap fare at around $250 per person, but you'll have to add the cost of car rental, about $150 weekly rate depends on the dates. Here are 2 sites you may find cheap fares for air, hotel & car rentals -

check with AAA they sometimes have special packages that are cost saving!
For the price it would cost to drive to Dallas, it would be better to fly since it takes over 20 hours to drive.
You can go to travelocity.com they are great with trip planning, also you can go to www.visitdallas.com they have great travel tips. I travel from California to Dallas all of the time it is a pleasant experience. Try to have about 2 drivers for the trip it will be about a day and a half trip to Dallas. Email me at jamesagambrell@yahoo.com if you have more questions I'll be glad to help. If you want to fly to Dallas you might want to try American Airlines they have really good fairs from California to Dallas right now.
I'd definitely fly from CA to Dallas, especially since June is full summer, and most routes between the two are going to take you through the hottest parts of the U.S. Make your reservations in advance, and you can get them at a pretty reasonable rate. You'll have to ask somebody else what to do in Dallas; I don't like the place after living there through 22 miserable years of summer heat and icy winters. If you like 110-degree heat, noise, dirt, pollution, and rednecks with guns, you'll love Dallas.
