What are the pros and cons of moving to plano, texas? |
Travel Info i'm a registered nurse from l.a., ca planning to move to plano, summer of next year with my husband and two young boys. just wanted to know if we made the right choice. i am thinking that plano is a good place to start a young family. what do you think? Travel Tips If you plan to stay a very long time, you need to consider the school situation in Plano. It is highly competitive (socially and economically). Elementary school is OK, but the schools are so jam packed that they have middle school, lower high school, and then high school with juniors and seniors. A graduating class can be about 1000 kids or more. And believe me, it is the most competitive situation I have ever seen. Brilliant kids cannot get into the top state universities (10% rule) because of the sheer numbers of kids in a class. They are stepping all over one another to get to the top. I don't know where you will be working, but consider Richardson, Allen, Coppell and others. All have good school systems (even DISD, in spite of how afraid people are of it, turns out some VERY successful college students). There are areas where you can live in Dallas and attend the Richardson schools. If you owned a home in LA, you will be able to do VERY well here in Dallas where it is easy to find a VERY nice home in the $350K range. It is very hot here (and colder too) compared to LA, and your utilities will be a lot more expensive, as will your property tax which is outrageous in the Dallas Ft. Worth area. Cons...it's Dallas, it's hot, it's sprawled out, and even though there is no personal income tax, property taxes and sales taxes are high. I would suggest moving a little north of plano- like mckinney or melissa. It's about 15 to 20 minutes outside of plano but with better schools and lower crime rates. Email me and I would be happy to send you some info. It's a great city but the traffic really sucks over there. I think Grapevine, Coppell or Southlake is better to raise a family if you are staying in the city. That's further than Plano from Dallas but it's a little out of the hustle. McKinney is alright too if you want to be on the Dallas side of things. good luck! Be prepared to pay more to live there. Good schools but a lot of drug problems with the kids. First of all, I live in McKinney which is just north of Plano. Preferably, I would move up there because it is not all filled in and you still can get property. Specifically, I would recommend the Stone Bridge. Our daugter goes to Glen Oaks Elementary which received a National Award. Plano is filling in and there is a lot of property up for sale. (ie: foreclosures, etc.) It is over rated. The benefits of living in Texas are: 1) No state income tax. 2) Cost of living Specifically, the school districts are excellent in Collin County, particularly if you are west of North Central Expressway. There is a nursing shortage in Texas so you will not have any problems finding a job. Brent M. Blonigan |
