Is there a safe and affordable area in or near Dallas, Texas that you would recommend someone to live in?

Travel Info
I will be moving to Dallas, Texas in 2 months and I am looking for a safe and affordable environment to live in. (probably an apartment) I will be working in downtown Dallas so I would like to be somewhat close to the area to avoid long drives to work. I am 23 and single so I'm not worried about good schools or anything like that. I would just like your opinions on a relatively safe and affordable place to live that isn't too far from the downtown area. Any advice???

Travel Tips
Hey there, I've been in TX going on two years now. Moved from Milwaukee WI. I would suggest the Lakewood area (which is were I live) I have a 1 bedroom 1000sq ft Apt in a four plex for 500 a month. It is a historic part of town and close to downtown. Maybe 5-10 minutes to most of downtown. Never have to get on a highway, which I strongly suggest if you don't want long waits in traffic. It will almost always take longer than 30 minutes from Plano into downtown during peak times just to give you an example when you are looking at a map. I would also suggest Uptown, especially of you are looking to have great places to go out right in your neighborhood. Great bars, restaurants in walking distances. Once again you don't have to get on the highway to get downtown to work. Maybe 10 minutes to most areas. Hope this helps.

close to the medical center on the north side...lot of professional people are there....

Living in Dallas is quite expensive, but you could move to the suburbs, such as Irving, Carrollton, Plano, Flower Mound, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Duncanville, and other such suburbs.

With most of those (if not all) you can save yourself from driving (thus paying exhorbitant prices for parking) by riding the DART.

Don't move to Oak Cliff though.
Although Park Cities gets a bad rap as being expensive... there are some apartments on the fringe of University Park that are affordable off of Inwood and University... there are also some places off of Northwest Highway and 75 or Greenville and 75 in the Village Area.... where a lot of single people live...
Nothin is safe anymore hunny!!!!!
(And trust me I even lived in the suburbs and it was dangerous!!!)
Take a look at "The Village" which is very close to the DART line. Lincoln Property Company. Also there are nice apartments near White Rock Lake. Uptown is great but I think you are a little young for it.
