Coming to Dallas, Fort Worth, or Arlington...?

Travel Info
...from rural Kentucky.

The people I've met from TEXAS have been, by and large, very helpful and friendly, and that's the primary reason I'd be moving to Texas (because I'm the same way!) I'm intelligent, responsible, and college-educated. I'm also looking for a reasonable cost of living (not breaking the bank to pay for an apartment), low crime, a great singles life, and access to arts and culture.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Travel Tips
Keller provides good housing bang for the buck, with good schools and low crime. However, it is also a family atmosphere, not much singles action. If you want a more rural setting, I think NE Tarrant county - Keller, Colleyville, Southlake, etc still has some good value. I live in a subdivision on 1 acre all brick home, built in 1984 of about 2,500 feet w/ about 60 oak trees. The amount of home I got for the $ is hard to beat anywhere close to a city.

However, if you are willing to make with a smaller place, I agree SW FW, off of Camp Bowie or so would be the best bet. Camp Bowie is an old section of town (cobblestone street in places) that has a lot of singles, cultural activities, and good restaurants nearby, while being 5-10 minutes from downtown FW.

The Fort Worth/Tarrant County area is by and large the most "laid back", I think. For being a major metropolitan area itself, Fort Worth just seems less crowded somehow. However Dallas is known for great culture and good shopping.

I myself live in Arlington; not much there but since it's between both, you don't really lose the city feel; it's also a major met area. If the city atmosphere doesn't do it for you, west and southwest Tarrant County would be good (I'm looking at purchasing my next house around there.) Maybe areas north of Dallas like Frisco and Plano, but they are growing FAST.
I think you'd find the most for your money in west and southwest Fort Worth. Houses and apartments in this area are inexpensive and you the cultural district is only 10 minutes away. If you move into Dallas it's a bit more conjested, and more expensive.
The City of Dallas is expensive. There are many communites that make up the MetroPlex such as Plano, Richardson, The Colony, Lewisville, Frisco, McAllen, McKinnney. etc.

Driving around the MetroPlex can be a nightmare. A ton of construction going on right now.

If you have a job or going to school, the length of the commute is a definate factor in selecting a place to live.

We were floored about the housing cost in Dallas when we relocated from Houston to Dallas. It was actually cheaper to buy a house than rent an apartment. (we were not sure if/how long we were going to stay in Dallas).

Be careful when selecting apartments in Dallas. Dallas proper has the 5th highest crime rate in the US. However, that generally refers to the section of Dallas south of I-20.

Arlington is a nice area but you will likely find employment elsewhere thus creating a long commute.

Fort Worth is also good and may be a better match based on coming from Kentucky.

One thing to consider...Texas does not have a state income tax. That is a good thing.
for God sake move to fort worth!!!! dallas will be too "big city" for you...and not nearly friendly enough. alrington is void of all culture, and has no city center and no character to speak of. fort worth is friendly, down home, loyal, and reasonably priced.
I'm originally from Indiana, and lived in the metroplex years ago. I lived in Arlington, Ft Worth, Irving, Dallas at one time or another. Traffic in these areas could be a problem at times. And these areas did have there share of crime. Apartment rental in the the metroplex is pretty standard, depending on what it is your willing to pay for.

You would probably like the Mid-Cities area of Hurst, Euless, or Bedford. They are centrally located and provide easy access to Dallas or Ft. Worth. And if you have access to any of the major freeways you can be anywhere in either Dallas of Ft. Worth within 30 minutes. And the crime rate isn't to bad either.
Consider the towns north of Dallas, unless you want to be right in the metroplex. Denton has two colleges. Sherman has a very good small college (not state supported) and housing is not quite as expensive there as in towns closer to Dallas.
