Why do a few Texans still believe they have a special right to fly the state flag as high as Old Glory?

Travel Info
I find it amusing that people in Texas still to this day believe this urban legend. Every time someone asks about "Why is it called the Lone Star state" or any other over-asked questions I see at least one person answer it as such. It's another example of unwarranted Texas pride. Want proof? Here it is:

As you can see from the article, ANY state can fly their flag as high as Old Glory. It's not a special law put into place from joining the union as many people still incorrectly believe. Other states could do it as well, however, they choose to show respect for the country of which they are a part.

Besides this one, what other Texas myths have you heard (and please omit "everything is bigger" because that one is overused.)

Travel Tips
Texas has always clung to the philosophy that they are almost a seperate country and that they will do things their own way. Its even in their state tourism ads. I have heard that they even reserve the right to seced from the U.S in the state constitution, though I don't know if this is true or not.

The Republic of Texas existed from 1836-1845. No other state can claim to have been an independent nation (other than Hawaii, of course, which was an independent monarchy). As far as having respect for the US is concerned...perhaps if you could remind me who the president of this country is.
that everything here is all cactus and tumbleweed.

that everyone wears cowboy boots and jeans.

that everyone has a Texas draw in their voice.

that everyone says "howdy"

that everyone here has ridden a horse or raised cattle.

that everyone in the state believes that urban legend.

P.S. Other states have had their flags at the same height. Been to three states where I saw this for myself. But you can't blame the whole state for one person doing that. Be careful that you don't over reach with your generalizations.
