Texans: Which metropolitan area is the best: Austin, Dallas or Houston? Why? |
Travel Info I believe the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex is the most popultated (over 6 million people), while the Austin-Round Rock is the least populated. Yet population isn't the issue. I mean which metropolitan area is best regarding: standard of living, safety, cleanliness, friendliness and traffic. Please answer in some detail; as I haven't been to Texas yet, and I still don't know what it is like. (I've been a resident of Orange County, CA for nearly three years) Travel Tips Austin by far. There is actual scenery and hills. The people also aren't as conservative as Dallas or Houston. Whole Foods Market was started in Austin to tell you the type of place it is. I lived in Dallas for 34 years before my job transferred me to Long Beach, CA. I prefer California by far. Texas is very hot and humid for months on end. That will take some getting used to since California is so dry. Housing is very cheap compared to SoCal. You can get a decent 1 bedroom apartment for $700-$800. The Texas Gulf Coast beaches can't compare to the ones in California. There is awesome gourmet grocery in Texas called Central Market and there is nothing like that in California. I miss that place! Others If you want to see Texas, go to Houston. If you want to see New York, go to Dallas. Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States. There's only slight differences in Dallas and Houston, mostly location. Houston sets very close to the Gulf Coast... about one hour from Galveston. Both are bustling cities with their fair share of crime and traffic snarls. Austin is near the Hill Country, and because of the huge main campus of The Un iversity of Texas, there is a younger vibe. But it is growing like mad, and Austin can be more expensive. Houston is a very diverse city, with over 150 languages spoken. Coming from California, you will be amazed at the low cost of housing here! Also, many Texans only operate in low gear, so try to be patient. Also, if AJ answers this ignore her. She is a frustrated teen who never leaves her apartment. Kind of depends on what you are looking for. My son loved living in Austin because he said, "people don't care what you dress like". "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular slogan. Those who live there for very long love it. (Personally I think people are kind of strange there.) Dallas on the other hand is more yuppie in my opinion. Driving the right kind of car, dressing top notch, etc. seems to be important to them. Houston I'm not so sure of. Friends who lived in the Woodlands loved it. It's like a mini-city with so much to do and plenty of places to eat, etc. I do know the traffic in all three is horrendous! Austin I think would have the lowest crime (not the inner city problems of Dallas and Houston) and the folks are pretty friendly. I grew up in Tennessee but love being a Texan--fortunately I'm in a smaller city. Welcome! I live in Dallas. Dallas is as Cowboy said, more like New York on a smaller scale but CLEAN, awesome nightlife. Honestly, between Dallas, Ft. Worth and Arlington, there are a ton of things to do- Awesome museums, Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor....Ft. Worth is the epitomy of Texas (rodeo, cowboys, etc.) Houston is just a dirty city and tons of traffic (waaayy worse than here!) and high crime with the influx of certain people from the hurricane. Austin is a good place to visit since it is so laid back...cool river there...lots of bars, clean city. So, Dallas or Austin would be your best bet. not Houston AT ALL...And im glad you arent even consider San Antonio. It is way over-rated! Dallas is a nice place but there are drugs & lots of violence here. Really nice downtown but the places where theres all the grafitti & everything it looks ugly & looks like no body takes prid in being from here. The good side theres lost of museums, six flags, and sports teams to keep you entertained around here. The people in southern Dallas county drive like ****. Their rude, cut people off but that is every where. Lots of construction going up and down i-35. Theres lot of construction going on around Austin but it's really nice there. I never lived in Austin so I couldn't really tell you anything other then traffic can be a nighhmare expecially after the UT football games. It's hot in summer but since your from California, I'm sure you are used to it. We have alot of bad stormy weather. More this yuear than I can remember. Don't let the drugs or violence drive you away though.. Texas is a nice place for the most part. (Since their are drugs and violence almost everywhere) depends on what u want, austin has great people feels more like a small town even tho it has over a million people. i'm from austin so i like it the best. great for families, and outdoorsy people. dallas metroplex i live there now, has a lot of big city stuff, concerts, museums, but not very charming. i don't care for it. but there are a lot of things to do. lots of resturaunts. austin has a high cost of living, but dallas has a very affordable cost of living. |
