The cost of leaving is lot cheaper in India compared to United states, specially housing food, clothes. Definetely it is cheaper to buy in India, depending what you are looking for. Software, computer and electronics are expensive.

you can get a hotel room for a couple of bucks and a meal for 50 cents or less
in some cases like taxis and guides yes , good hotels are priced high, food is faily reasonable ,things to bring home as trinkets are not a good deal you can buy them cheaper here
