Delhi visit help? |
Travel Info Hi, We would be visiting Delhi shortly. We will be staying there for a week. I wanted to know which are the best places to visit in and around Delhi and mode of transport? We are planning to cover Delhi city tour, Agra and Jaipur and if possible also Haridwar/Hrishikesh. Also another problems is about the hotels in Agra, Jaipur and Haridwar. Is there any way we can get the information on the hotels ? We don't want any luxurious hotels to stay. Just plain and simple will do. Also since it is the month of december is it advisable to visit Hrishikesh and Haridwar ? Please guide us on this. Your help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Travel Tips Must See in Delhi Red Fort Red Fort is one of the most magnificent palaces in the world. India's history is also closely linked with this fort. It was frorth here ht the British deposed the last Mughal ruler, Bhadur Shah Zafar, marking the end of the three century long Mughal rule. It was also fromits ramparts that the first prime. Minister of India, pandit Jawharlal Nehru, announced to the nation that India was free form colonial rule. The mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, after ruling from Agra for eleven years, decided to shift to Delhi and laid the foundation stone of the Red Fort in 1618. For its inauguration in 1647, the main halls of the palace were draped in rich tapestry and covered with silk from china and velvet from Turkey. With a circumference of almost one and a half miles, the fort is an irregular octagon and has two entrances, the Lahore and Delhi Gates. Jantar Mantar Jantar Mantar is an astronomical observatory with masonry instruments, built in 1724 by Jai Singh, the mathematician and astronomer king. The Samrat or Yantra supreme - the largest structure shaped like a right-angled triangle, is actually a huge sun-dial; the other five instruments are intended to show the movements of the sun, moon, etc Qutub Minar The Qutub Minar made of red sandstone rising to the height of 72.5mts is an architectural marvel of the 13th century. Also a must is the visit to Ashoka Pillar dating back to the 5th century. Though made of iron it has with stood the weathers of time.A very interesting belief is assigned to this pillar- Stand with your back to the pillar, and if you can hold your hands around it, then make a wish and it will surely come true. Raj Ghat On the banks of the river Yamuna is the Raj Ghat where the father of the nation Mahatama Gandhi was cremated in 1948, soon after India attained it freedom. Chandni Chowk One of the main markets of Delhi, Chandni Chowk was once lined with beautiful fountains. But today the place is very crowded and congested. Chandni Chowk is located opposite the Red Fort. The Area has got the Digamber Jain Temple which houses the Birds hospital. On one end of Chandni Chowk is the Fatehpuri Mosque which was erected by the wives of Shah Jahan. India Gate Flanked by ornamental ponds and lawns, Rajpath is host to the Republic Day Parade. The two secretariat buildings and Rashtrapati Bhawan on the Raisina hills are located on the two sides of this immensely broad road. Previously the Boat Club, besides the Rajpath, was host to many demonstrations and Rallies. India Gate is towards the eastern end of Rajpath. http://www.yatraindia.com/delhi-travel-g... for hotels check out th following sites : http://www.hotelsjaipur.com/ http://www.taj-mahal-india-travel.com/ho... http://www.travelmasti.com/hardwar.htm... yes, it will be quite cold in delhi, jaipur, agra & haridwar. so better be fully equipped. also since u plan on sight seeing, better would be to hire a car for the whole day. He will insruct how and where to go!! There is absolutely no problem in visiting Haridwar and Hrishikesh. The temperature there is not very low. As far as the hotels are concerned. There are plenty in Delhi. Since you want an OK type hotel, I dont think that there will be much problem I hope that you will visit these places and like it very much. Wish you a happy and safe journey. God Bless Enjoy!! Dear Friend.. first of all.... Welcome to India. now to answer ur ques. abt ur visit to delhi. To begin..One week is way too short a time to see Delhi ..let alone squeeze in a visit to hrishikesh.haridwar Delhi is a 5000 yrs old city and an absloute awe inspiring amalgamation of amazing historical bulidings and the litany od New age construction. If u really wish to 'see' the entire place comprehensively..u need at least a month just in Delhi. But i guess u can see abt 10 major land marks in 3 4 days..which could be 1. Qutab Minar and the linked buildings 2.Old Fort 3.Red Fort 4. Humayuns Tomb 5.Safdarjungs Tomb remember there r abt 13000 listed monuments of historical importance in delhi alone ! those 5 r my top big boys. now Delhi , jaipur(capital of neighbouring state of Rajasthan) and Agra form what is called the Golden Triangle of indian tourism..Agra has the famed Taj mahal and a lovely fort and Jaipur is home to sum of the most magnificent buildings from the rajput era. agra is abt 200 kms from delhi and jaipur 250 both very well connected by train and road services u should keep 2 days for agra and 2 for jaipur at the minimum..and that would be just bare minimum. haridwar /rishikesh r what we call the religious and adventure tourism circuit...in hills of the state of uttaranchal the places r sacred to indians for religious importance..and they r natures heaven on earth. rishikesh is home to the Art Of Living movement ..who teach transcedental meditation also this is the abode of the most sacred of indian rivers..the Ganges my suggestion would be.. land in delhi...rest ..spend one day seeing one or 2 major spots..shoot off to agra ..spend as much time as u feel fine..from agra shoot off to jaipur .. again spend as much time as u feel fit..come back to delhi..then take time out for delhi as u feel fit..and then think abt haridwar rishikesh stretch..coz thats totally unlinked Abt Accomodation...in jaipur ask for RTDC HOTELS viz.. Gangaur,Teej and a few others..those r abt 500 rupees per nite(yes ..get the thomas cook Address in delhi /agra/jaipur without fail for off the shelf currency conversion) and travel with US dollars preferably though not necessary. http://www.hotelsjaipur.com/rtdc_hotel_g... http://www.hotelsjaipur.com/rtdc_hotel_t... I in agra there r plenty of good hotels for all ranges ..u just be careful in checking abt running hot water, clean loos and heating etc ..i mean just avoid the 'too shady' kinds DELHI; www.delhitourism.nic.in and also their tourist helpline TOURIST HELPLINE # : 91-11-23365358, 23363607 General tips. its winters here..days r very pleasant..late evenings nights and mornings r cold..temps in delhi vary between abt 10 to 27 during the day. so carry light woollens..if u cant delhi is indias best place to buy inexpensive clothes.. DONOT show cash openly at public places esp foreign currency..thats an invitation for trouble..DONOT be over friendly with taxi drivers and auto drivers..just be to the point...dont let him involve u into ne discussion..most work as touts for shady hotels..thats a big NO NO. for example u can call delhi tourism from ur place and make first accomodation enquiries. once u land..go to the guys at DT office..Govt officers r generally nice and well read people..and it always helps in getting a bit friendly with a particular officer and addressing him by his first name. Have fun..but remember..donot be judgemental abt minor irritations...and donot rush ..if u dont have time..drop a leg of the tour..but wutever u see take time on that..and yes get along good movie and still cameras. Good Luck. am sure u will fall in love with my homeland. if u need u can write to me at paul_mcartney2001@yahoo.com ATUL. |
