Travel Info What is the "Minimum Wage" in Denmark? Travel Tips There is a minimum wage for all citizens of Denmark called the *officielt mindstelavtl酶n* (official minimum wage). This minimum wage can vary a lot depending on whether you are a member of a labour union or not. Presently the US dollar is low (under 6 dkr) so the absolute minimum wage for danish citizen is about 15$ for cleaning jobs and lowest beginner level in supermarkets. There is that high 37-42% income tax and a 25% sales tax to boot. Young apprentices in crafts/trades make less but get special schooling paid by their masters or companies A bus driver will make about 22-24$ an hour; an electrician about 45-50$ and don't ask me what a lawyer makes. Anyway since the opening of the European Union to eastern countries, Denmark like most other western nations is being flooded by *cheap* workers from Poland, Lithuania, etc. They are exploited by both their agents and danish middlemen and often work for as low as 5$ an hour, sleep four-to-eight in a shack they have to pay for. The danish unions are starting to block this exploitation, but with full employment and lack of tradesmen it's hard to stop. So if you are considering coming to Denmark the higher you are qualified the better you are off, but unless a computer specialist you'l need to be a citizen of the EU. Otherwise work visas almost impossible. Others about $12.00 an hour. I was told there is no official "minimum wage" but the wages, even after 39% tax is higher then in North America. Living in Denmark, Canadian I'm not sure what the minimum wage is at the present but, when I lived there a dozen years ago I had to pay the equivilent of $14 US for minimum wage. Income tax scale starts at 50% and goes up as your earnings increase. Sales tax [MOMS] is included in the price marked on items but is 25%. Gasoline for a car is about $8 per gallon. |
