Difficulties concerning the English moving to Denmark?

Travel Info
have any of you moved from England to Denmark and what were the biggest problems you encountered

i麓m danish and my girl friend is english and we want to be together but we see some trouble
she does not work, what would be the likely hood of her getting a job here?

Travel Tips
Short answer:
1) She'll find it quite difficult to find work.
2) She should try Irish/English bars or the Postal Service
3) She must sign up for a language class!
4) If she can't get work, consider getting her enrolled on a university course. There are many courses in English, and hopefully she can qualify for SU.

Long answer...

I'm English and I moved to Fredericia four years ago.
My wife is Danish.

As far as work for ME was concerned, I had a teaching job lined up before I moved over.

However my wife, despite being Danish and despite having a degree from England as well as decent results from Folkeskole and Gymnasium, found it difficult to get anything more than shop work, and even this took four months to find (she got a temporary job over the Christmas period and they kept her on).

She found the period of unemployment extremely depressing and it didn't help that it fell during the dark and rainy autumn/winter period.
She found the shop work unfulfilling.

A big problem was that the First Class Degree in European Studies that she worked so hard for in England wasn't a great deal of use in Denmark because there seems to be a slightly different attitude towards degrees between the two countries.
In England, a good degree (in a fairly sensible discipline) demonstrates your academic ability and potential. I have a friend who got a degree in History which got him a job to train as an accountant (in which he's doing very well).
In Denmark, on the other hand, you really have to qualify in the job you plan to do.

I MEET A LOT OF ENGLISH PEOPLE where I live who come over (usually with little or no knowledge of the language) because they have a Danish partner.
A lot of them end up working in the local Irish bar.
Many of them go to language class in their spare time.
Most of them have found difficulty finding other kinds of work, mainly due to the language barrier.
One of them just got a job as a postman, which had been his job in England. His Danish is pretty patchy, although he learned the numbers and basic pleasantries from the bar work.
The postal service seems to employ a lot of foreigners. I knew German guy in my own language class who also had a job with them.

My wife, by the way, decided to do a degree in Journalism in Odense.

REMEMBER THAT THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO is go to the local Kommune an sort out a CPR-number for her. She also needs a 5-year residence permit, which she can hopefully later upgrade to a permanent one

Being English (i.e. an EU citizen) she shouldn't, in theory, have quite the same problems regarding work permits as an American would.

I could think of a few jobs i could do for you there x x x
Being with you x
It depends on what kind of work she does. If she learns Danish she'll have a much easier time of getting a work permit. The same for if she has a college education. You need to contact your embassies and start asking them questions! ^_^
American with Danish Fiance
i think i just c ommented on your girlfriends page...but i am american and live in denmark. husband is danish...and it is very difficult to do...it takes a long time. u can email me and i can give u more info. but if you dont have a student visa (takes 2-3 months), work visa (2-3 )MONTHS, or residence visa (up to 1 year) its hard to stay legally. i am still waiting my residence visa after ayear. to get a job u have to have a work visa , or find someone under the table...i own a cleaning company and workers are needed in my area so i may can help if u live in the randers area or 氓rhus. they want danish workers everywhere so she would have to learn danish fast and to get benefits from the government she has to be here legally 3 years with some sort of visa and then she can get it unless she is a refugee. she also has to have a cpr number and to get that they need proof she is here legally so health costs if she doesnt...and she also either way has to have 50,000 danish kroner in a bank account with her name.

u can look on the danish immigration page and see the rules in depth and then call them to ask specific questions.

as speaking english and the culture i can give more info on that culture wise and the problems u will encounter....i have been doing this 3 years and witha baby on the way i'm entering new territory with this.

other areas of work may be bigger companies like m忙rsk, danish crown...etc....

but without going to school and a work permit its hard to get here legally with all the benefits...but please dont be illegal. do it right.

remember u can email me and also i can employ her til she grasps the language but she has to have a permit for work...we are growing quickly and will be hiring assistants and salespeople within the year and that will pay more.
