What is the fastest and shortest route from Dallas, Tx. to Denver, Co. when driving?

Travel Tips
If you want to stick to interstate highways, take I-35 north from Dallas all the way up to Wichita, KS. Around the south side of Wichita, hit I-135 north through the city and head north to Salina, KS. (You're now about halfway there.) North of Salina, you'll hit the junction for I-70 west, which will take you to Denver. That's a total drive of about 850 miles, or, at an average of 60 mph, a bit more than 14 hours of driving.

You want a straighter route that runs through a LOT of smaller cities and towns? Take US 287 from Dallas west/northwest to Amarillo (about 360 miles), then stay on US 287 out of Amarillo as it swings north and briefly picks up with US 87. At Dumas, TX, US 287 stays northward and joins up with US 385 in the Oklahoma Panhandle and northward to Lamar, CO. Then, US 287 splits off and continues northward by itself until it hits US 40 at Kit Carson, CO. Get on US 40-287 and go towards Limon, CO, where you can pick up I-70 west to Denver. Total trip: *very* roughly 760-780 miles, but you get slowed dramatically through the cities and towns along the way - at an average of (I'm guessing) 50 mph for that trip, you're looking at roughly 15 hours of driving. I usually take interstates only for such long trips, so I don't know what kind of average speed you'd have on the US highways.

My advice:
- Stick to the interstates (the first route) and your directions are easy: north for half the drive, and west for the other half, and retracing your return path is simple.
- Start *early* in the morning (7:00 a.m.) and share the driving if you don't want to get a motel room, and you should make it OK in one day barring any traffic backups. Otherwise, you'll have to stop either in Salina (pop. 45,000) or further west along I-70 in Hays, KS (pop. 20,000); you should be able to get a room if you want to break up the drive, but there's not much else between Hays and Denver.
- The only major "drawback" is getting about 40 miles of the Kansas Turnpike as soon as you hit the southern border of Kansas coming out of Oklahoma, but if you want the fastest way, pay the extra couple of bucks. If it still functions the way it did when I last drove it 11-12 years ago, you'll get an "entry ticket" wherever you get on, and then pay a total fee for the total distance on it to wherever you're getting off (should be exit 42 near Wichita). Source(s): Rand McNally Road Altas - I recommend that you buy one for your trip!
