How to Avoid Altitude Sickness in CO?

Travel Info
I am flying to Thornton, Colorado in a few weeks and am afraid of getting altitude sickness. Is there any way to prevent altitude sickness? I am only going to be out there for a weekend to see my niece who was just born and i dont want to be sick the whole time I am there. I already suffer from dizziness occasionally and am afraid I am a good "candidate" for altitude sickness..

Has anyone suffered from altitude sickness or can give me any good suggestion on how to avioid this? I am from Ohio so it is a lot higher of an elevation than where I currently live!

Thanks~!

Hey there

I got altitude sickness in Quito (elevation about 10,000 ft.) when I lived there. It was heightened by the fact that I am a hypochondriac and was a smoker at the time.

Realistically you can't get too sick if you're under 12,000 ft.

You will, however, feel the altitude a little, but don't get all paranoid about it, it's natural and you won't die from it. I think the altitude around Thornton is under 7,000 so really you should have absolutely nothing to worry about.

You will feel a little out of breath, and probably sleep a lot.

However, since you are going just for a few days you may not feel much of anything. When I go to Quito it takes about 2 days for the altitude to kick in.

Avoid alcohol and smoking while there if you are worried. Drink juices and rest a lot.

But really, don't worry unless your lips turn blue (very rare and unlikely at that altitude).

No to worry I moved to Albuquerque and had the same thing. Drink more water to avoid and reduce symptoms.
My own
There is a prescription drug to help eleviate some of the symptoms of altitude sickness. Ask your doctor.

If you don't do that, here's some advice from someone who lived in Florida all their life and then moved to Colorado ( I go to the mountains every weekend):

- Drink lots of liquids.
- Don't drink alcoholic bevrages.
- Eat plenty of carbs.
- Take it easy. By the time you realize you exerted too much, it's too late.
- Breath with awareness. Breath deeply and steadily as much as you can when exerting yourself. But don't hyperventilate.

If you are planning in staying in Thornton(I live a couple of cities over), it shouldn't be too bad. There's little chance of getting really bad altitude sickness. But the combination of mile high air and jet lag could be enough to make you a little woozy the first few days. If you go in the mountains, get a good night's sleep the night before.

Surprisingly, people who are apt to other kinds of sickness aren't necessarily likely to get altitude sickness. You would think the really old and children would be most likely, but it's usually people who are in their teens and 20's.
When I moved to Colorado I never really got that sick. The first few days I was really tired and I drank so much water. So I guess my advice is to drink lots of water and get rest. If you go hiking just take it easy because you will find yourself losing your breath when you normally wouldn't and don't go on an empty stomach.
when your on the plane don't forget to chew gum and yawn alot. Ears popping can be worse then altitude sickness.
You can see your doctor and get something for it. I would also suggest making sure you stay hydrated.

I don't think it's something you can completly avoid. It's just our bodies way of adjusting to something new. But relax and take it easy and your body will naturally adjust!
Yes dont go you wont get it!
