What is the highest mountain's name (not steepest) in the Colorado Rockies ? |
Travel Info Able to be viewed from Denver, Not far from the red rocks. With a lake at the bottom and another one half way up. Travel Tips Yup, it's Mt. Evans. Colorado State Highway 5 takes you to the top(Highest road in North America). Word to the wise: If you are going to take this drive, DO NOT start from Denver with a full tank of gas on a hot day. If you do, you may have a problem with the expansion of the gas in the tank. First the tank will get a little warm from the car (expansion), then as you go higher the outside air pressure will be quickly dropping. The top of Evans has about 60% of the pressure in Denver. This will put even more internal pressure on the gas tank(You sealed it with the gas cap). If there is not enough airspace for the gasoline to expand to, then the fuel pressure will get quite high. BTW: Yes. I found this out the hard way. It happened to me. My engine started running real bad. I had to stop. Then I heard noises coming fro the area of the gas tank(It was the pressure trying to equalize). As soon as I made a small twist on the gas cap, the gas came spewing out. NO, I did not even get the cap off, was on 1/8 of a turn to release all that pressure. Glad to say nothing bad happened. Never happened again either (same car) over many more trips to the top of Evans. Others Mt. Evans. It even has a road to the top. Mount Elbert is the highest mountain in the Colorado Rockies, but it is quite a ways west of Denver, out near Leadville. It's 14,433 feet high. There are 200 named peaks visible from Denver, including 32 that soar to 13,000 feet and above. You probably mean Mount Evans, which is definitely the tallest mountain that can be seen from Denver. It is 14,264 feet high. Echo Lake is the lake at its base, and Summit Lake is partway up. I think you're talking about Mt Evans, but that is not the highest mountain in Colorado. Mt Elbert is the highest, but there isn't a lake by it, that I'm aware of. The base of Mt Evans is near a lake and a cute little cafe/gift shop |
