Need a good mountain vacation idea when living in Denver.? |
Travel Info Moved here three years ago from Houston. Have three kids ages 10, 13 and 15 - boy, girl, boy. Need something relaxing, cheap and entertaining for the kids.. Travel Tips If you want an enjoyable family excursion go to Estes Park and over Trail Ridge Road. Estes Park is a neat little town with lots of neat shops, horseback trail rides and on the other side of Trail Ridge Road is Granby, another neat little town. This could be done in a day, depending on how much time you spend on Trail Ridge Road -it's gorgeous!! Estes Park has all kinds of lodging. Go to www.RockyMountainNationalPark.... for lots of info. This is my husband's and my favorite vacation spot. Others Rocky Mountain National Park. Estes Park, CO. Take the kids camping/fishing....11 Mile Reservoir is a good choice. Hike through Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. Visit the top of Pikes Peak. Visit Mesa Verde (SW Colorado). Get out of the tourist traps and go down to south central colorado to a little place called 30 mile camp. It's relaxing and cheap but I don't know about entertaining for the kids unless they love the outdoors. I agree that Estes Park (RMNP) is an idea because it's not too far from Denver, and you could rent a cabin to cook your own meals instead of paying at a restaraunt. I used to live up in the Northwest corner of the state, and I loved camping in remote spots like Dinosaur National Monument. I realize it's not for everyone, though. Now that I'm a parent, backpacking through Colorado's wilderness seems a little scarier then before. I'm not sure I would feel comfortable taking my son on those journeys! If you are up for camping..there are two areas (in different directions I would suggest). One, is Red Feather Lakes. This is about an hr north of Fort Collins, off of Highway 14 I think. The area has a bunch of camping places, places to hike, places to go fishing (hence the..lake in Red Feather :D) and is somewhat out of the way of places like Estes Park (which is another great alternative..but too crowded sometimes!). Plenty of places to camp (either just off the side of the road..or actual campgrounds. Second is up at Lake Dillon. Dillon is around the Silverthorne area just off I-70 as you drive up to Vail. It was the place my dad used to take us as kids fishing (you could probably even rent a cheap boat..if your kids felt like swimming or fishing from a boat). There are also plenty of campgrounds around this area (but first come first served..so head up on a weekday rather than weekend to find a spot). |
