Questions about moving to Denver, Colorado?

Travel Info
I'm considering moving to Denver, Colorado. I have a few questions.

What's the average price for a studio apartment? In Los Angeles $1,200 is starting rate. I'm looking for cheaper than that. Mind you just a studio apartment for a single male who will not be bringing any furniture with this move.

Does one need a car? Can I get around Denver without a car (although I do have one, I hate driving). How's the bus and/or train system?

Job Market. How's the job market in Denver in the administrative field?

Weather: How often does it snow and how hard is the snow? I'm looking for a cold weather enviroment. I love to be freezing cold!

Whats the average heating bill in Denver?

I know I asked a ton of questions. I'm scoping a new area to move. I hear Denver is expensive but I can't imagine it being more expensive than Los Angeles.

Travel Tips
Hello! And yay to you for considering Colorado as your destination! It's a beautiful state that offers so much.

Depending on the area you intend to move to, housing will probably run you around $700-900. LoDo (downtown Denver) is steep, so if you can avoid that area, best be it.

Mass transportation in the city isn't the greatest, but it's getting better. They are currently building a train system that parallels I-25 (the big interstate through town). They've been working on that for a few years and it's helped tremedously. There are a lot of hiking trails throughout the city. Many people I know like to take some nice walks/runs (etc) during lunch or after work.

The job market is decent. Colorado's rate of growth right now is massive so you shouldn't have too difficult of a time finding anything.

Snow's a little unpredictable. It doesn't snow as much as the rest of the country thinks it does around here. We don't live in a snowy winter wonderland in the cold months of the year. If we're lucky, it will snow once, perhaps twice a week. And usually the snow melts off before another storm hits. Albeit, it does get cold. We'll have a couple solid weeks of below 0 temperatures. No snow then though! It's too cold for it. It has to warm up a bit for the snow to start falling. Average temperatures around here in the winter are in the 30掳 to 40掳's.

Heating depends on how well you take care of you place. It you properly insulate your attic, windows, etc. I also have a wood burning fireplace that brings down the price of my heating bill considerable. (That is, on the days we can use it!)

I'd be happy to help you out with any other questions if you have them. Email me if you like! Denver is a great city, as far as big cities go! There's so much to see and do. And the other poster is right, it's a very cultural town. And they do love their sports. And John Elway will always be a legend in this town! Source(s): Genuine Colorado Native

Other Travel Tips
It is unusual to pay more than $1000 for a 2 bedroom apt unless you live in downtown Denver. I had a 2 bedroom 1 bath in Englewood that ran $700. it is unusual to find anything with furniture included around here. You might find one but very unusual.

A car may not be necissary depending on where you live and where you work. The bus system is ok but not as good as in other cities. We also have a growing light-rail system which you may find useful. I used it for quite a while. I do have a friend who hasn't had a car in 3 years and does just fine. I personally don't like to wait for the bus.

Job market fluctuates. I would recomend coming for a visit and seeing what you can find. You may find something similar that you like real well.

Weather. Well it really dosn't get bad here. It might snow and you might even get 2 feet and within 3-4 days it will all be gone. On the other hand it is around 1-2 hours to the ski slopes from here.

If you find the right place to rent they sometimes include the heat. This is something I had for about 10 years. on my own it runs something around $100 give or take.

As for comparing Denver to LA. Denver is much less expensive to live.

I love it here and would recomend it to anyone. Just had a fellow move here from Ohio after he came to visit.

If you wan't more info, feel free to email me.
Go to realtor.com or newhomesource.com to get an idea of the comparisons in cost....... then go to craigslist.org to begin your search for a rental place.

COLD? at least for two weeks out of the year you will think you are going to freeze to death..... very cold for those two weeks... then it is moderate. Sunny a lot even thou it is still cold. More sunny days than San Diego or Miami. Lots of sunshine.... one reason why it will snow in the morning or night before and before noon it will be gone. Not always but 50% of the time, yes.

I think you will need a car..... the transit system is not strong enough for me..... unless you love riding busses. they have a solid bus system.

Heating bill will depend on how warm you want to stay..... between 80 and 200 dollars.

The sports teams are well loved and the city has a very strong love for the arts.

Broncos 鈥?NFL
Rockies 鈥?MLB
Nuggets 鈥擭BA
Avalanche 鈥?NHL

They are all winners and well supported. I am a die-hard Broncos. Have been since 1976. They were in two super bowls when I lived there and it was a blast. The city was on fire for them and it made it fun for me. The people either love them or hate them..... say, "how about them Broncos?", and you will be able to talk to anyone..... for a short or long period of time. Great way to meet people and to be friendly as well.

not much on the job market...... all I know is it has always been boom or bust...... best to get in on the boom so you can get through the bust time. GOOD LUCK.
LIVED THERE FOR THREE YEARS...... GREW UP IN COLORADO
We moved here from CA last year. Definitely much cheaper than CA. We live in one of the more expensive areas and pay about $800 for a one bedroom, but you can definitely find places that are less expensive than that. In general, Aurora is the least expensive and there are some nice areas but there are a few that aren't great. Although the worst neighborhood in Denver is nothing compared to the bad neighborhoods in LA. The area where we live Highlands Ranch, is joking called The OC, because so many people from CA live here. We were surprised to hear that people say that Denver is expensive but you hear that mostly because it more expensive than the surrounding areas in Kansas, Arizona, etc. There is some public transportation, the light rail, buses, but I would say that you will probably need a car unless you want to stay in one local area, like downtown. The job market in Denver is pretty good and I haven't looked for jobs in the admin field personally I would say you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job. Although, you can expect the salary to be lower than LA. I think it only snowed about 6 times last year and it definitely snowed less than we were expecting. But it varies some from year to year. There was a storm or two last year were it got down below zero. And the first storm in October we got about six inches, which I think was the most from any one storm. Our average heating in winter for a one bedroom was about $60. It's definitely a good idea to research before you make the big step. Good luck.
