What are the best things to do in glenwood springs, co? |
Travel Info Restaurants, oudoorsy stuff, anything. I know the hotsprings are there, are they worth going to in august? It's trip for our anniversary. Travel Tips We go to Glenwood every Labor Day weekend. It is a neat little town with tons of things to see & do. The bike ride is fantastic. There is actually a place, near the hot springs, at the Hotel Colorado called Canyon Bikes and they can hook you up with a bike. They'll even drive you and your bike to the start of the canyon trail and drop you off. The bike trail, which is 16 miles, leads right back to the bike shop. Pack a light lunch if you like and stop at one of the numerous rest stops along the Colorado River. (There is one hill on the trail that may get you! Other than that, it's a relatively easy trail.) Here's a link to Canyon Bikes: http://www.canyonbikes.com/ Hanging Lake is a beautiful climb. It's a little bit of a climb if you're not from Colorado and acclimated to our 'thin air'. It climbs 1,000 feet in just over a mile. It gets a little steep near the top, but it's worth the work. If you do Hanging Lake, be sure to finish the hike by walking up to Spouting Rock....the source of the lake. It's breathtaking. We've also packed in a lunch and had a bite to eat by the lake. Whatever you take in, be sure you take out. I don't believe there are any trash receptacles. Something else that is kind of fun, if you're into it, is the old cemetary at Glenwood Springs. They believe Doc Holliday's body is buried in this cemetary, they're just not sure where. There is a tombstone for him, but it's just there so he has a headstone. Be sure you have breakfast at Rosi's Little Bavarian Restaurant. It's on the main drag.....you'd take a left when exiting the interstate. It's just about a block from that main intersection. The address is 141 West 6th Street. It's a fabulous restaurant and bakery. If you go on the weekend, your wait will be awhile, be believe me, IT'S WORTH IT!!! And buy some pastries for the road!!! (I recommend the omelets or eggs benedict!) As far as the hot springs go, I recommend them in the winter. Or at least when it's cooler. The big pool really isn't THAT warm. The smaller pool is nice and hot, but when it's 100掳 in August, well, it's just not too desirable to me. The best time to sit in the 100掳 pool is when the snow is falling all around you! Youo can watch the bread rise at the bakery or watch the grass grow at the park. Many residents enjoy watching them close the 7-11, (at 8 PM). My personal favorite is to fill the ice cube trays and wait for them to freeze. What a fine and busy place Glenwood Springs is. OK, how about some practical suggestions! The bike path along the Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon is one the most spectacular I've ever traveled on. It's about 12 miles from one end of the canyon to the other, and relatively flat in most places, so you could easily do a daytrip. A very nice hike in the canyon is to Hanging Lakes. It's not long (1 mile), but it's pretty steep, but worth it to see the waterfall at the top. Another suggestion would be to visit Aspen, about an hour up Hwy 82. The hotsprings might be worth visiting in the evening when it's cooler. Have a great trip! I agree with both the bike ride and the waterfall hike suggestions. Also, there are some great restaurants in town. The water slide is great as well. The gym there is good too. The springs will probably be too hot but the pool with the water slide is a lot of fun. Sit out at night maybe even in the springs and watch the stars over the mountains. I truly think it is a magical place and I've been there many times thoughout the different seasons and always had a great time there. Enjoy! |
