What is the most scenic route across the Colorado Rockies?

Travel Info
I need to cross the Colorado Rockies on a cross country trip. I will be coming from Utah and going to Kansas (I do not need to go through Denver). The route I choose needs to be SOUTH of I-70. Which is nicer? The route through Aspen? Or the route through Gunnison? (Or something else?)

Travel Tips
Gee, if you're driving from Utah to Kansas, I-70 is goes directly there and it's a beautiful route, driving through the Grand Mesa east of Grand Junction, then through Glenwood Canyon, one the most magnificent pieces of highway engineering, then up into the mountains past Vail and Summit County, through the Eisenhower Tunnel, down into Denver, then continuing east. It would take approx. 10 hours from the Utah border to the Kansas border without stops.

You don't say where you'll cross the border from Utah into Colorado, so it's hard to recommend specific routes, but here are some alternate routes:

- You could go to Glenwood Springs on I-70, east on Hwy 82 to Aspen and up over Independence Pass to Hwy 24, then decide how to go east.
- You could drive south on Hwy 50 out of Grand Junction to Gunnison and stop of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and take Hwy 50 through to I-25.
- If you come from southern Utah, take Hwy 160 east through Cortez and Durango and either continue with that route, or take Hwy 550 north which is called "Million Dollar Highway" and is the most scenic (and scary) drives in the state.

It just depends on how much you're hauling, how much time you have, what time of year it is (places like Independence Pass are closed Nov-May) and how much out of the way you're wanting to go. Driving is slow through the mountains, so keep in mind you won't be able to cover as many miles in a day as driving on flat interstate. Almost all the roads through central Colorado are beautiful. If you get a good map, it will show scenic routes. Really, any way you go, you'll get good views of the mountains. Have a great trip!
