Travel Tips
The longest greyhound trip I've taken was 8 1/2 hours on the bus, and that was between Tallahassee and Sarasota in Florida. (It's a loooong state, and greyhound tends to take back roads in order to hit bus stops.) I am a young woman and as such, I understand when you want to know abou the safety of the greyhound bus. Here are the pointers I have from my travels:

- Try not to ride the bus at night. The people on the bus, and particularly at the stations, are sketchier at night. During the day, I found that the greyhound was fine - some of the people you meet are fun to talk to. Check your route before you buy your ticket. Do you have any overnight portions of the trip?

- Bring your cell phone and make sure it is charged fully. If you get off a bus at a rest stop, keep it with you so you can call people if needed. Make sure you are back to the bus well before the deadline - most rest stops are 15 - 30 minutes, and people do get left behind.

-The greyhound bus stations themselves can vary in safety levels tremendously - from being a big, well lit and patrolled bus station (usually the larger volume stations are this way) to being a hole in a wall surrounded by wife beater wearing men with tatoos. If you can, get someone to check out the status of the stations you will be waiting at (point of departure, destination). Even if you end up having to depart or arrive from a particularly sketchy station, if you plan, you won't have to wait there long for some one or a taxi to pick you up.

- Have your ride get to the station about 10 minutes before the scheduled arrival time, and tell them they may need to expect to wait for the bus. They aren't always on time, and in my experience usually arrive 15 - 20 minutes late.

- Try to keep to yourself. While it can be fun to talk to people, it can also be an invitation for them to bother you throughout the whole ride. Use your instincts about who to interact with and who not to interact with. As is the case with any form of public transportation, be aware of yourself and your surroundings. Don't leave valuables unattended, and don't wear valuables obviously (keep the gold necklace under your shirt). If you go to sleep and you have a carry on bag, sleep ontop of the bag.

- For personal comfort, bring snacks and water for the trip. Hand sanitizer is a good idea as well.

All of that said, I've only ever witnessed one bad incident on the greyhound - I was worried because this guy was going to pick a fight with a driver. The driver, by the way, can call the cops on anyone who causes trouble and also can kick people off the bus. Overall, if you ride during the day, keep your wits about you, have a method of calling people for help and have planned your route and pickup, you should be fine. Hope this helps. no, it will be the worse ride of your life. crazy people ride the bus, just ride by any greyhound station, every greyhound station i have ever seen is in the worse part of town.
I have never had any bad experiences on the buses themselves. It mostly depends on where the bus stops at.
If you have never done something like this before, you may want to try flying or finding another way to get from point A to point B. My experience with the Greyhound buses is that you can't be naive. If your bus is stopping in major cities than you need to know some street smarts. If you are young, I wouldn't go alone. Better to be safe than sorry.
