Travel Info Where & When is the best time to see the Aspen Tree's change colors in Colorado? Travel Tips Changes a bit from year to year due to weather, but in general: Aspen start turning at the higher altitudes in mid September. Then color moves down in altitude. Peak time is right around the end of September. By late October, most of the leaves in the mountains are gone. Excellent places are near the town of Aspen, McClure Pass, and in between Telluride and Durango (Lizard Head Pass). Close to Denver are Kenosha Pass and Guanella Pass, which are pretty decent. IN the middle of October on the road to cripple creek, or By Buena Vista on the road up cottenwood pass. Or if u r n for an adventure go on the Durango train at the end of October!!! Hope this helps.
