Travel Info What is there to do while in Colorado Springs for a week ? Travel Tips Colorado Springs offers plenty of fun things to do. But best of all, Springs has probably the best scenery of any of the front range cities. You can and probably will spend much time just gazing at the mountains. I'll give you a rundown of some of my favorite stops. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo http://www.cmzoo.org/ This is a pretty neat zoo. Yeah, you might might be thinking, 'A zoo...but I'm not a kid anymore.' Well, this is a pretty neat place. My husband and I still go there and we have no children. It will be even more fun then! If you're from out of state, let me warn you this zoo really is in the mountains and much of the exhibits require hiking up and down and around the mountain. Bring plenty of water and take your time as not to induce any altitude sickness! Cripple Creek http://www.cripple-creek.co.us/... CC is a short drive from the Springs if you're up for some more adult-oriented fun. Cripple Creek is an old mining town that now has legalized gambling. Plenty of slots, few tables. If you have time, take in a meladrama for some good old fashioned fun. The Broadmoor http://www.broadmoor.com/ One legendary hotel. Be sure to take it in with a least a drive around the grounds. It's majesty is truly unique. Seven Falls http://www.sevenfalls.com/ Okay, I have mixed emotions about Seven Falls because it's not a natural waterfall. Yup...it's man made. If I suggest anything from this place, it's the hike at the top of the falls. There's a mile round trip hiking trail that takes you to Inspiration Point. This alone is worth the trip. It's a breathtaking view of Colorado Springs. Again, much hiking and altitude change so be careful. The Air Force Academy http://www.usafa.af.mil/ The AFA really is a sight to see. The chapel alone will be worth the trip. If you are in town at the right time, I suggest a trip to an AFA football game. Best time you'll have. We try to take in a game every year. Be sure to bring your sunscreen....although I always walk out of that place with a little windburn. It's a drafty mountain! The fly-bys and parachootists bringing in the game ball and flag will be worth the trip by themselves. Well, there's a few places to start you in the right direction. I've listed some more below in case that's not enough. Feel free to email with any questions! (Oh yes, and if you can, take a trip up Pike's Peak. How many times in your life can you say you've been to the top of a 14,000 foot mountain!) Denver isn't too far north. The mountains are due west. Garden of the Gods, Air Force Accademy, Pikes Peak Garden of the Gods, Air Force Academy, Royal Gorge (Canyon City), Cripple Creek (if you like gambling), Pikes Peak, Tejon st. downtown (lots of bars/clubs), Pioneers museum, Old Colorado City (lots of boutiques/shopping). I've lived here since 1984 all those others and the US Olympic Training Center, Seven falls, ride the tram to the top of Pikes Peak. if ur a Christian , Focus on the Family Center is there also. The Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway to the summit of Pike's Peak is an excellent way to spend an afternoon - bring your camera and a jacket, and drink water to help deal with the change in elevation (even if you live at a fairly high one already). Cave of the Winds, Seven Falls, and similar attractions are good, too. Manitou Springs is a fun place - laid-back and interesting. You can head west on Highway 24 (Colorado Avenue) to get to Florissant, and see the dinosaur fossils if that's something you like. The May Museum has a big collection of all sorts of bugs; the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is one of the primary breeders of giraffes in captivity in the US (maybe the world...?). There's a Farmers Market every Saturday from about 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or later); it's just a block or so from 24th and Kiowa St in the western part of town, and there's usually something interesting going on. Old Colorado City has all kinds of interesting shops. Fountain Creek Nature Center and Bear Creek Nature Center are interesting spots if you need a family outing. |
