Thinking...
There is a wonderful place in Morrison, CO, maybe 20 minutes from downtown Denver, called Red Rocks. It's a park, but they have concerts there, too. The Beatles actually performed there once, and Willie Nelson says it's his favorite place to perform.
You might also check out Cottonwood Hot Springs in Buena Vista. Please visit these places on their websites. Also, Garden of the Gods in ColoSpgs is gorgeous--similar to Red Rocks. The weather here is pretty now, the rainy season is over and snow doesn't usually fall around here until Halloween.
My source is my own experience- I live in CoSpgs. Hope you have a good time!
Mount Rushmore in S.D and Crazy Horse about an 6-8 hr drive. also Deadwood S.D. it's worth the drive
Go South of I-70. Gunnison/Lake City/Creede/Pagosa Springs. Beautiful and varied country off the beaten path, uncrowded, lots of inexpensive but decent accomodations/food.

To some people below:

Aspen is not inexpensive, even in the summer.

Vegas in 8 hours means _averaging_ 95 MPH. Wow.
This time of year a nice drive is over Independance Pass between Twin Lakes and Aspen. You can do it in a day or stay in Aspen or one of the neighboring towns for the night. another thought might be to head over to Grand Junction, spend the night, look around alittle bit, maybe even go to Colorado Nat'l Monument, and the next day go over to Arches Nat'l Park in Utah.
