When does ski season really begin near Denver?

Travel Info
I'm going to visit a friend in Denver for skiing. Breckenridge's "opening day" is November 10th. Coming from the northeast, I know that just 'cuz the lifts are running doesn't mean its worth your time (poor coverage, few open trails / lifts). Does anyone from that area (or someone who visits that area a lot) know when it is safe to make a trip out there and find good snow and a high percentage of open trails? I know the weather between now and then will probably have a large effect, but I guess i'd wonder if they engage in heavy snow making early in the year, and let the natural stuff pile on over the winter.

Travel Tips
The larger Colorado ski resorts do extensive early season snow making to prepare a snow base for the ski season. The quality of the early season snow depends largely on natural snowfall. Most years, there is very decent snow by Thanksgiving. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is usually the first ski area to open and the last to close.

We Coloradans are very fussy about our snow. Some local residents may refuse to ski on snow that visitors might find delightful.

Other Travel Tips
<<I know the weather between now and then will probably have a large effect...>> Um, yeah, that's what it's all about!

It will either be a great ski season (like last year's record snowfall) or a crappy season (like three years before that, when we were in a drought). If you don't have to make reservations right this second, then hold off and see how the first couple of months pan out if you're depending on optimal ski conditions. Usually, February and March are snowier than November and December, but that's just an average. Keystone and Copper do have snowmaking, so they're safer bets than some other places. The bottom line is YOU NEVER KNOW about weather!
the end of december- beginning of february are probably your best bet but like the other people said it really varies from year to year.
I used to ski in vermont... Even a bad day in colorado is about 100 times better than a good day in the east.

The snow is generally very good... even in bad years. March is our snowiest month of the year.
