I am possibly moving to the Denver/Boulder CO area. What is the winter weather really like?

Travel Info
Does it get horribly snowy, or just really cold and windy?

Travel Tips
I moved here a little over a year ago, June of 05 to be exact. I thought I was moving to "snowy Denver". I thought it would snow in early October and that snow would be on the ground until late April. WRONG!

The winters here a quite mild actually. Last year it did snow several times but the snow was almost always all gone by noon. With respect to the cold, there was only two weeks (the two weeks following Thanksgiving) where it was cold (single digits), but on Christmas day it was 72 degrees. The one thing we did have last year was lots and lots of wind. Trash pick up day in the neighborhood was always interesting. It was like a little scavenger hunt. Everyone trying to find their trash cans which had blown all over the place. All in all it's a mild winter.

Here's some OFFICIAL weather info:

The climate for Denver is mostly dry and mild, though snow falls often in the winter. The snow usually melts quickly because of the sunny days. Because of the closeness to the mountains, the wind is less than out on the open prairie. Denver has 300 days of bright sunshine a year!

There's a saying in Colorado "If you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes, it'll change." Lately the winters haven't been to bad. Yes it does get snowy, cold and windy. The last blizzard we had was '99. It'll start snowing around Halloween and stop the end of April first part of May. A couple of weekends ago it did snow in the mountains. Sometimes it does get below zero.
They do get a lot of snow!
It has been said, if you don't like colorado weather, wait 15 mins. and it will change. Winters here can be very snowy and bitter cold and also mild with almost no snow at all. Weather in colorado is a grab bag. Native of Ft. Collins,CO here.
I was living there for a year and believe me is awsome, u gonna luv it
We have the best weather any one can want. yes we do get snow but it does melt. it may stick for a few days (if that) and then it warms up and is gone. Denver is not in the mountains as most persons perceive. It seems that it always snows on monday night football when the game is here. The most snow here usually is in february to april. it is not uncommon to see natives in shorts all winter. i am not going to lie it can get extremely cold and get below zero at night but during the day it is great!
It is quite variable. Some days are quite warm (like 60+, people play golf in February). Not a lot, but usually a few each winter. Sometimes it gets very cold, days with the high temp below zero can happen. Nights are usually quite cold, the day/night temperature difference is large compared to most other places.

The most striking thing, if you're from the East, is how much sun Denver gets in winter. And bright sun, not that red thing you often see out East. So snow doesn't stay on the ground as long as it does out East, and you don't get a lot of slush. Snows are occaisionally large, like more than a foot, but the usual snow is a few inches that's gone in a few days. A lot of it simply evaporates rather than melts. The ground is snow free more often than not, Denver is very nearly a desert with regard to precipitation.

There's enough sun and enough warm days to make winters much easier here than they were when I lived in Chicago, Those winters were brutal.
