What are good mountain trails to climb close to Denver, Colorado? |
Travel Info I climbed Flatiron #1 last suturday and that was my first time. I AM HOOKED!!!! I want to create a hobby of hiking mountains on the weekends. I just don't know a lot of places. Behind the Flatirons, is Green Mountain which is mainly Ranger trails so we (my uncle and I) are going to scout it to the top Saturday. What next???? Travel Tips The Boulder and Jefferson County Open Space Trails are a good place to start. The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News publish weekly guides to hiking trails. Several trail guides are available for the Front Range. National Geographic Maps publishes trail maps for the entire country. The maps are available in either print or electronic format. Source(s): Jefferson County Trails at http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/openspace/... Boulder Trails at http://www.bouldercolorado.gov/index.php... National Geographic Maps at http://maps.nationalgeographic.com/... Other Travel Tips Try the Bluebell trail that goes between Chautauqua to NCAR. We used to hike that at night during a full moon and it was spectacular. I don't think I'd do that now however with the recent mountain lion problems. Another great hike is near the old town of Eldora. Drive from Boulder, up Boulder Canyon to Nederland. Stay on the main road and just as you're going out of Ned there will be a right turn going to the high school. Stay on that road. It will go through Eldora and will become a dirt road after about a mile. Go about another 1/4 mile and the road will fork. The right fork goes to Buckingham Campground and some alpine hiking and the left fork (my favorite) will go about 1/4 mile before it dead ends at the creek. From there you can cross the creek and hike the old jeep trail up to a series of three lakes. The first lake will be about 1 1/2 miles. It's a wonderful area and I think you'd like it if you're lookiing for hiking. Be sure to visit Summit County - there are more mountains than you could believe, and it's only a couple hour's drive. My wife and I hiked Torrey's and Gray's peaks. That's an 8 mile hike with a rewarding view from the 14,000+ ft summits.
