Travel Info I am driving from the Denver airport in January to Snowmass, do I need to rent an 4x4 or will a car be fine? Travel Tips Theoretically a car should be fine. It depends on the weather. Generally speaking you can get to Snowmass without much difficulty. Sometimes it may just take a little longer and you'll have to take it slow. On a rare occasion, the passes might be closed or have chain/4x4 restrictions. I guess I would say it depends on how flexible your schedule is. If you have a day or two to get up to Snowmass...no problem. If you want to be guaranteed that you'll make it to Snowmass you may want to get the 4x4. Others You're talking about 200 miles and going over two major mountain passes. It really depends on the weather, so who can say. However, if you end up needing chains, or end up spending your vacation stuck in a snow drift, you'll be sorry you did not get the 4x4 (and if you are with other people, they will never let you forget it!). A car with front weel drive would be fine. They keep those roads coated with de-icer. However, if you plane to be side streets a lot an AWD or 4X4 would be helpful. Spend the extra bucks, get all wheel drive and avoid problems on your vacation. They try to keep i 70 fairly clean, but when a snow storm moves in, there isn't much they can do. If it were me, I would pay a little extra and go for the 4 wheel drive. Even though the sun may be shining in Denver, that doesn't mean they're not getting a foot or more of snow up in the mountains depends on the weather... there really is no telling. |
