Travel Tips
There are many nice family neighborhoods in and around Denver. There are no places within 20 miles of Denver that I would describe as a village or village-like. I don't think most towns would like to be called quaint, but a few places around here might fit the bill.

There are many towns and neighborhoods that have managed to maintain a sense of place. I think Golden, Littleton, Boulder, and Highlands (definitely not Highlands Ranch) are examples of this kind of neighborhood. The Highlands Garden Village, Lowry, and Stapleton developments in Denver are superb examples of new urbanism.

If you are looking for a truly rural community, there is always Last Chance. Source(s): Golden at http://ci.golden.co.us/

I think Cherry Creek has the cutest old houses EVER! their school district is Awesome, but if you're wanting a village feel move to the mountains. There aren't as mny old town part (like they have in Chicago) because of the way Denver was mapped out. If I were moving to colorado i'd move to loveland it's a great community with all that you're looking for.
Check out Castle Rock, about 30 min. south of Denver.

try the Reunion, Stapleton, and Lowry develpments. they all nice houses and cute shops with businesses and recreational activities. If you want a mountain town try Evergreen.
Golden is as close as you'll get within an hour of Denver. You have to go around a hill to get there, so it's a little isolated from the metropolitan area, leading to the stuff you want. The development at the old Stapleton airport is trying for that feel, but all the buildings are new.

Farther out the best near mountains would be Leadville, about two hours away. But the climate is very very cold. Maybe Greeley, a farming community on the plains a little less than two hours away.

More info can be had by googling the above.
