Is an SUV necessary for driving from Denver Airport to Steamboat Springs, CO in the winter? |
Travel Info I am planning a ski trip over the winter holidays. I am skiing at Steamboat Springs, CO but am flying in to Denver. How bad are the roads in the winter. Do I need to rent an SUV? It's a lot of extra expense to rent an SUV versus a standard vehicle, but I don't want to get stuck either. Anyone from this area or experience in this area, please post your thoughts. I'd appreciate it. Travel Tips It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Rabbit Ears Pass - which you will be traveling over - can be notoriously icy in the winter. There is a big snowmobiling area on the pass that has a lot of open area the wind blows through there and I've seen the road drifted in some spots and icy in others. As others have mentioned, the weather is unpredictable so getting there might be a breeze and getting back could be a nightmare. I never take chances in the mountains during the winter. I've lived here all my life - 51 years - so I've seen some compelling reasons to err on the side of caution. Others No, but you really have to be careful with the weather. A four wheel drive is always a better choice but even then you can run into weather that requires you to put chains on the tires. It is possible that these can be gotten from the rental car company. There is an airport in Steamboat so you may want to fly. You may have discount coupons from many different sources to defray the price of the car/SUV. The Entertainment book has them and often the airline frequent flyer programs send them out as well. What ever you do, be sure you sign up for all the incentive plans for air, hotel and car. It may take a long time for the points to add up, but it is free to join and just a waste of a possible freebie one day if you don't Steamboat Springs is quite popular and there are paved roads the whole way. Usually you will have no trouble in a regular car, but the weather can change rapidly in the mountains. I go skiing all the time with a Chevy Malibu. just get a mid or full size car with front wheel drive, that's all you need. But stop at a supermarket and buy some bottled water, you need to stay well hydrated here in CO. and some snack food just incase you should (but unlikely) get stuck on the road for awhile you'll have something to eat and drink You don't need an SUV, any front wheel drive car should be fine. If there happens to be a bad storm snow chains might be required on the pass, that's about it.
