When the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad arrived in the area in 1871, it chose to bypass Colorado City and its many saloons and build its own town of Colorado Springs two miles farther east along Monument Creek. In 1917, Colorado Springs annexed Colorado City. Today, Colorado City is a registered National Historic District. Gunfights and saloons? If so, Buckskin Joes is about an hour's drive south then west, near the Royal Gorge (on US 50 west of Canon City), if you care to look it up on a map. Colorado Springs itself is a city of about 400,000 residents. As another poster answered, Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs are on the city's west side and are quaint artist-type towns. Right by Colo Srpings is a place called the Cliff Dwellings. My dad took me and my brother there when we were kids, and is is AMAZING. It depicts the Aztec ruins. A lot of history. Yes there are a lot of ghost towns, and indian reservations. Alot of really cool things. any search engine will give you a lot of information on it. Check them out. The Colorado Rockies have great history too. Colorado Springs is pretty much one big tourist trap. It's a city with a few touristy spots in and around it. If you want to see Colorado, drive out into the mountains and forget about the Springs. A couple of the gambling towns - Cripple Creek for example - are still set up like "western towns." So is Telluride out west. |
