I plan on attending UC-Denver, what are some fun things to do around there?

Travel Info
im visiting there on the 18th of january to check it out, I just want to know if there are any places i should hit up. And to know whats good once im out there.

Travel Tips
There are two kinds of cities out there. There are cities like New York and Chicago which are great to visit but you would never really want to live there. On the other hand you have places that are lovely to live but kind of boring to just visit. Denver is definately the latter.

It's just that Denver's "must see list" involves mostly stuff that Denverites would enjoy--Elitches, City Park, Museum of Nature and Science, Washington Park, and suburban malls (Park Meadows, Colorado Mills). I whole-heartedly recommend all of this stuff and I think you'll really enjoy it when you come out for good.

I will tell you that if you're looking for the ultimate urban party scene a la Real World you're going to be disappointed. Lodo has some neat, hip places--no doubt--but it's no LA or New York. That goes to the whole liveability deal. This is a brilliant place for families. Coloradans are a church-going, family-loving lot. That doesn't mean we don't have fun. We do! It just usually involves more outdoors stuff than booze or dancing. Also check out the sports scene here. The Nuggets should be playing and if--please God, please God, please God!!--the Broncos are still in the playoffs the city will be on fire.

Enjoy your visit and "adjust" your expectations. This is a very friendly and helpful city. It's not flashy and urbane but there's lots of good, decent people who care about their town. I don't think you can ask for much more than that. Source(s): Metro Denver born and raised! The few, the proud, the natives.

Other Travel Tips
Colorado is a great state- we are looking at it as a possible move and had a good vacation. TYou can ski of course and snowboard all around Denver. Also in the Summer- go River rafting on the Arkansasa River and go biking and hiking and all at all the national parks. The great Sand Dunes are there too as well as beautiful forests and all. Go to Colorado.com and look up the north central area and it will give you all kinds of ideas. Pikes peak. Garden of the Gods. Kit Carson etc. Have fun- good school too!
Colorado's the best I'm a native and I still love it after 24 years. There's all kinds of outdoor activities, an awesome nightlife, great shopping, and of course the beautiful view of the mountains every day!! You should definitely hit the mountains- it'll still be snowy but that's fun- everyone likes estes park and it's not too far. If you like to go out you should check out lodo (lower downtown) there's great clubs and bars.
I don't know what type of things you are into but...If you like to people-watch or stroll in and out of shops....you could definitely check out the downtown area...If you like nature etc. check out the mountains nearby...you can ski there, shop there, take scenic pics...If you like to go club hopping check out Lower Downtown....AND If you like shopping you could check out several of our malls like Cherry Creek or Park Meadows (2 of the best in the area in my opinion).

A previous answer alluded to the fact that we are not LA or New York but you probably already knew that. As a Native, I love living here. I've checked out other cities for potential career/academics opportunities but Denver will always be home for me and thousands of newcomers who've decided to make it home too !
I'm kind of new to Colorado too (been in Denver and now Colorado Springs) and I love it here. I'm not a big bar scene or club scene person, and all the people with previous answers are so right. It is a great, although more family and health concious place (all of Colorado).

One thing I discovered is the Aquarium near the big amusement park. I haven't gone into the Aquarium, except the gift shop which is right next to the most amazing restaurant. It is Landry's, which is a very nice fish restaurant (I love the irony) and it has a HUGE 20,000 (or so) gallon tank even with a big shark. I swear to god, I took a friend there for her birthday, and we sat right in front of one of the windows into this tank, and the little fishies would come right up to the window and peek over her shoulder to see if she was having Uncle Merlin for dinner! I agree that the Cherry Creek mall is wonderful, and has lots of wonderful shops to browse as you imagine decorating your new home. The Botanical gardens are quite lovely, near Cherry Creek, and if you have a car, head west on I70 into the entrance of the mountains and watch for signs for Mother Calibrini's shrine (not many people realize it is there) and prepare to kick your own butt as you climb the hundreds of steep steps to the top and see a magnificent view of Denver in the distance. The road is extremely narrow that goes up there, so hopefully any lingering snow won't stop you. It is worth the climb. Also, across the road somewhere along there is the "Spaceship House" that is on a bluff looking down on highway 70. I've never been close, only seen photos of it in magazines, and one glimpse as I drove along the freeway. Oh yeah, Mother Calibrini's shrine is not too far from Buffalo Bill's gravesite. The story circulated after his death that his dream was to be buried in that spot on a hill, but years later it came out that I think his sister was paid to say that he wanted to be buried there. Anyway, it is a nice place to see, except for the ugly power towers nearby. Like everyone else has said, there is scenery to die for, but I think you can find all kinds of interesting places to see. Somewhere there is a list of all the ghost towns in Colorado, I've seen at least 3 but they are in hard to reach places during the winter unless you have a horse or snowmobile...hahahaha anyway, if you find anything no one has listed yet, please let me know! I'm still exploring this fantastic place.
