Where can I vacation in Colorado US to ski, in walking distance to the lift and to a town center, cheap & nice |
Travel Info I'm a single Mom, 1 child. I want to go to Colorado for 7 days and have a nice, easy experience. I don't want to drive when I'm there, so I want a resort that is close to a mountain. I can't pay a fortune. But, I still want an atmosphere like a nice ski lodge - not hotelish. Travel Tips I think Keystone, CO would be a great place to go. It's about 2 hours from Denver International Airport. From there, you can stay in town and ski during the day, and they have night skiing as well (the only resort around here that I am aware of that does). Also, Arapahoe Basin, another resort is less than 10 miles away. It's a smaller resort, but less commercialized and thus less expensive and less crouded, especially on the weekends, and there is shuttle service between the two. It's great if you want some variety. Breckenridge is a little further up the road (maybe 20 miles) and has a lot of accomidations, but in my experience is more expensive. Others all resorts are gonna be expensive for lift tickets, but keystone or beckenridge would be a good choice. you could stay in silverthorne or dillon, they both are only 20 minutes or so from either mountain and only 1 1/2-2 hours from DIA. lived in colorado for 20 years and have snowboarded for 15 I second the vote for Breckenridge, a nice little small ski resort town. It usually is a little cheaper than other places, like Vail, Beaver Creek, Aspen, Steamboat, etc. I have not stayed there, but the slope side Beaver Run Resort was recommended to me by many people: http://www.beaverrun.com/resort.php/beav... There are lots of other places tyo stay there as well: http://breckenridge.snow.com/info/winter... Also Winter Park is nice, tons to do, really family oriented. I don't have any recommendations of where to stay in Winter Park, but you can check out this link: http://www.skiwinterpark.com/gettinghere... Have fun! I'm not sure what you're picturing exists. The closer to the slopes - the higher the price. Skiing and cheap are not synonymous terms. The least expensive place might be Breckenridge but even there, if you can find lodging now, you'll be paying a lot of money and will likely still have to drive to the base. If you aren't totally sold on skiing Colorado, check Red River or Taos, NM. I think they will be less expensive for you. Try Crested Butte if you can get there (definitely NOT on the I70 corridor). You can stay on the mountain or even in town and catch busses to the bottom of the lift. It's medium-sized and VERY secure for your child. You can catch a bus into town for some great meals and groceries. I would recommend that you rent a small condo and eat breakfast in. Or, there are some good B&Bs or an old fashioned ski lodge called the Nordic Inn. If you have access to buy lift tickets through the Safeway in Denver, it will be cheaper, or the resort offers some really good packages. The ski school there is great and the kids have a wonderful time. there isn't going to be anywhere that is in walking distance of a resort that is going to be cheap. there aren't really going to be any cute little ski lodges that are at the base of a resort unless you spend big money and go to aspen. there are lots of hotels just a few blocks away from keystone that all have buses that go to the base so you don't need a car. with hotel and ski tickets tickets you're probably looking at spending like 250 dollars a day plus eating. there are buses that run from keyston, silverthorne, dillon, frisco, and breck for free too so a cheaper choice is to stay at a cheap hotel in town and catch the bus. to safe money remember to book early and not during big holidays. |
