What kind of work is there up around durango, or silverton, or leadville. colorado? |
Travel Info i wanna escape the summer heat down here at my lattitude and altitude. when its 94 here i look on the internet its always 20 degrees cooler at the higher elevations. So i wanna fulfill a dream and live at those higher elevations for several months like from ahh say mid april till oct. but can i expect to find work? Travel Tips All of those towns are tourist areas so many are hired for the Summer only. Here are some suggestions. Campgrounds, tour guides, Durango & Silverton Railroad, motel workers. Your age makes some difference and of course experience. Good luck and have a great summer. Great area Others Hotels, restaurants , summer camps, dude ranches, outdoor guides, retail shops. However your timing is pretty ambitious. Summer Season is June (mid june usually) through August with a few folks trickling through in Sept. Be aware that most folks in communities like this have to work at least two jobs to pay the rent. Consider this - Durango has a population of somewhere around 20K (judging from 2003 numbers) and they are suffering a population boom. The Californians can take credit for a lot of this. With the influx of people with money coming in, the real estate prices have gone through the roof. The other thing is that Durango is a college town, so there are a lot of college kids looking for jobs. When you couple the two, it means a very few jobs for an awful lot of workers. Chances of finding work that will pay the bills are little to none unless you work for a company that will transfer you there. The other thing is that while Durango is near the mountains, it's also near the desert. Durango can get pretty danged hot in the summer time. Sure, you can go up 550 and cool in the mountains, but if, for some reason, you aren't able to do that when you want to, you're liable to be right back in the 90's that you wanted to get away from. Although, one of the local past times is floating the Animas River through Durango. That would be a nice treat from the heat. Many summers spent with relatives in Durango. you could become a miner if you live in Leadville, course I'm not sure if they still do mining out there. My dad and my brothers lived there while my dad was mining. well, I know they hire lots of people for seasonal work. Here in Estes we have a bunch of kids getting shipped in from all over the world in a few more weeks. Here's what I say, I just did the same thing you are thinking of and DON'T regret it a bit, but I came from Michigan. Just get on your motorcycle with a duffle bag and roll. |
