Denver/colorado springs? |
Travel Info Getting ready to move out there and want to know whats there to do for familys out there.. and will we have fun? Travel Tips My youngest son lives in Colorado Springs. We took our granddaughters out there this past summer on vacation. Talk about fun. There is so much to do. There is the Cave Of The Winds---fun. And you have to go to the Garden of The Gods---great fun. And they have a childrens program so they can earn a Ranger badge. Seven Falls---breathtaking. Cave Dwelling---girls loved that. And of course never forget to visit the downtown area know as Old Colorado Springs---they have great shops and a fantastic farmers market. Then there is Pikes Peak and all the little things to stop and see on the way up and down from there---more fun. There are lost of other things we saw, lots of museums. Great place to live and great vacation spot. Good Luck and don't forget to enjoy yourself and all The Springs has to offer. Others Will--- You and your family are in for the "times of your life" the area that you are moving to is crammed full of major activities for you and all the members of your little group !! At hand will be--- Pikes Peak-- Royal Gorge--- The super zoo at Colorado Springs--- the NFL activity of the Broncos--- the Air Force Academy--- hundreds of outrageous Mom and Pop businesses that cater to every kind of curio and specialty need--- and this is but to mention the hundreds of places that you will have at your disposal to go on camping and fishing trips that will be like ---around the corner and World Class in category !!!! Then is Winter--- a simple cruise out in any one of three directions will take you to Winter Sports that are among some of the best in the World !!! You, my friend are in for a major thrill and I'll bet you won't be there any time at all until you'll be calling it Home with a pride that will be hard to distinguish from the Natives !!!! I just returned from that area and it's definately a beautiful place with alot to offer. - Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (You can even feed the giraffes! Be sure to drive up to the Shrine as well. Right now they are doing some remodeling though so certain areas are off limits at the zoo. Free Parking but $12.00 to enter the zoo but it also includes entrance to the Shrine for that day. If you just go to the Shrine I think it's around $8.00) - Seven Falls ($8-something to get in.This is definately a cool place but there's alot of step-climbing. To get to the Eagle's Nest you have to climb 184 steps to the top to get the best view of the waterfalls or you can take the elevator if you want a quicker view. However if you want to hike on the trails to Midnight Falls and such you will have to climb 224 steps I believe. Take your time. It may not seem like too many steps to some people but to many people they are a pain in the rear-end but definately worth the time and effort. There's a little rest area half-way up and if you need breaks before that just stand for a minute. If you're afraid of heights though and you get scared you may not want to go all the way to the top because there is no elevator on that part and the only way down is the steps. I, myself, was a bit nervous at first with the height but I'm glad I pushed myself to go the whole way. It's beautiful. It's very family friendly and I saw tons of kids there when I went. They have 3 gift shops but I really only recommend the larger of the 3 by the waterfalls. You can also buy some fish food for $.25 and feed the fish. There were some ducks there in the little pond area as well who also enjoyed the fish food. Also, not inside the Seven Falls area, but very near it, be sure to visit Helen Hunt Falls. That was beautiful as well and *FREE*. There are falls in the start but be sure to take the hike up to the top to see more and get a great view of the wilderness and city in the background.) - Royal Gorge Bridge and Park (I think it cost $11 for the bridge. World's highest suspension bridge and park has alot to offer such as shops, animals, petting zoo, skycoaster, etc. This is definately a place for the family but again involves alot of walking and heights. The bridge does sway a bit when the wind is blowing hard. Looking down and around just makes you say "Whoa..." It can be a bit intimidating but it's completely worth it to walk across the bridge. It's 1,260 ft long and 18 ft wide. I was a bit scared walking across it but on the way back I was totally fine, I had adapted to it well and even kneeled down on the wooden planks (1,292 of them!) to take pictures through some openings of the water, rocks and tracks below. They also have one of those aerial-tram things. Also, people are allowed to drive their vehicles across the bridge as well with the pedestrians walking it. I very much recommend visiting this place. I think we spent over 4 hours there. If you want to go to the shops and such be sure to go on a week day because everything was closed on the weekend.) - Buckskin Joe Frontier Town & Railway (Located by the Royal Gorge Bridge. Restored Frontier buidings, gift shops, dining, Wild West entertainment, take a trip on the little train for a great view of the Royal Gorge Bridge, etc. The Railway is open March - December. The rest of it is open May - September.) - Garden of the Gods (Free to enter. Lots of cool rock formations including the famous "Kissing Camels". Lots of hiking to be done at this place and many pictures to be taken. Maybe you'll get lucky like we did and get to see a bunch of friendly wild deer. Also, gorgeous views of Pikes Peak. Also be sure to stop in at the Trading Post gift shop and have a snack at the cafe. There are some picnic areas in the park as well and I think a camping area.) - Pikes Peak (Scenic drive, hiking, wildlife, fishing, gift shop, etc.) - Pikes Peak Cog Railway (Expect to spend atleast 4 hours. I think the ride takes a little more than 3 hours. Prices depending on season are $29.00 - $31.00 for adults and $16.00 - $16.50 for children. They have a gift shop and cafe. You are allowed to take food on the train but it has to be bought through them and it can be pretty pricey (like $18.00) for one of their "box lunches" which includes basically a sandwich, chips and drink. You can't just take your own food so I recommend eating before you go and then eating after you leave.) - Cliff Dwellings at Manitou Springs ($8-something to get in. Lots of stone dwellings to explore. Some are easier to squeeze into than others. Cool place. Definately check out the huge gift shop.) - Outlets at Castle Rock (This mall is a very nice and clean with I think 120 stores and a view of the mountains.) - Also be sure to check out all the shops in Old Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. there are wonderful thing all along the mountains. It's a great area and you will love it. I highly recommend just getting in the car and going with no real destination. Head north, towards Ft Collins and swing into every place you find. I live in Estes Park, right at the enterance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. A person could spend days there alone. Cripple Creek is a neat little place to go. The sports stadiums are all new and clean, with fairly good teams. The people in Colorado are really friendly too. When you get into the Boulder area and north of there, they have a wonderful little mexican cantina on almost every street with authentic food. Enjoy it, I moved here not long ago and will probably never leave. I've been to denver and its a very neat place. yes you will have fun there are big malls movies bowling and a lot of other fun stuff Colorado Springs is great....There are alot of family things to do...Go to the mountains, hike, fish, camp.....Alot of nice restaraunts too...I miss it alot....They have Garden of the Gods..Nice....cave of the winds thats great for the whole family....During the Winter they will have the North Pole (for the kids ) to see Santa and his reindeer You can even mail letters from there at only the stamp price an they will send it from the North Pole stamped on it...Its great for the kids.... Good Luck~ |
