What areas in Metro Denver, should be avoided when looking for somewhere to live in Metro Denver?

Travel Info
We are planning to move to Colorado next year and we want to know what areas NOT to move to. I have 2 small children to consider as well.

Travel Tips
Five Points and Capitol Hill are high crime areas. Your best bets are Washington Park in the city. and Englewood/Littleton in the south Metro, Lakewood/Golden in the West Metro, Arvada/Westminster/in North Metro and I'd stay out of the East. Hope this helps I've loved here 37 years in the Washington Park Neighborhood and wouldn't move for anything.

I'm a native, and if I were moving back I'd avoid Denver and all of its adjacent suburbs. Best bet would be Longmont, about 30 miles north -- close enough to commute, but even with its own recent growth it still has a nice small-town feel to it. Good schools, too.
The vast majority of areas in Denver and the suburbs are great places for families! If you're working in the city or close by, there's no reason to move miles and miles away and have to deal with a long commute.

The city of Denver itself is great and has very few areas that should be avoided. It's really hard to pinpoint specific neighborhoods to avoid, so I'll suggest looking into new developments like Stapleton and Lowry and established areas like Cherry Creek, Hilltop, Crestmore, Park Hill, Washington (Wash) Park. All the suburbs are great and have many new developments with various price ranges.

Denver and the metro area is generally safe, with good school systems and plenty of recreation opportunities. I wouldn't worry too much about where *not* to move!
It all depends on your income level. Sure Wash Park and Cherry Creek, and Stapleton are great areas, but if you are lower middle income, single or not into the Urban revitalization then those areas are out. With median house prices in the .5mil and lofts going for 250+ it is not attainable for many of us.

Sure you can live in Longmont or Castlerock which are only 30 miles away, but if you are looking for a nice commute 30 miles=an hour or more depending on the time of day.

My recommendation would be the west side suburbs. I prefer the NW metro area. It is less strip mall-ish in general. Less crime, easier commute, Great schools, hometown neighborhood feeling. I am from Denver originally, moved away for 15 years and just moved back and the only place I would even consider moving is the Northwest area.

The neighborhoods to avoid.......Five points, montbello and anywhere off of Federal Blvd. This is from someone who works with Denver cops all day long.
My family and I just moved to the Denver metro from Germany. We found an apartment/townhome in southern Lakewood just north of Littleton. It wasn't easy searching neighborhoods and apartments and schools from Europe, but we managed. Look for housing in your budget, cross reference with schools (greatschools.net), and call the local police department and talk to the public affairs liasion. If you can, plan a house hunting trip before you move.. That will certainly give you a feel for the local area. According to the PD, as a general rule of thumb the southern and western areas of the metro region are the best.
Experience
I would stay away from sheriden and anything off of federal BLVD.

I would recommend littleton, wash park, greenwood village, and cherry creek.
